Courteney Cox Wants to Direct a ‘Scream’ Movie: ‘Nobody Knows More About That Movie Than I Do’
After three decades of facing Ghostface as Gale Weathers, Courteney Cox believes she may be ready to take on the Scream franchise from the other side of the camera.
Speaking with Deadline at TIFF while promoting her sophomore feature as a director, Evil Genius, Cox said she would be interested in directing a future installment of the horror franchise she has been part of since Wes Craven’s original Scream arrived in 1996.
“I think I should, honestly. Nobody knows more about that movie than I do,” Cox told Deadline. “I mean, and the creator, and Wes Craven, and the writers, and everybody who’s been in it. But I think it’d be great and fun and a good publicity thing. Get on it.”
It is an intriguing possibility for a franchise preparing for another chapter.
Cox most recently returned as Gale Weathers in Scream 7, once again joining Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. Directed by franchise veteran Kevin Williamson, the sequel proved commercially successful despite a considerably more divided critical reception. According to Deadline, the film earned nearly $208 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Scream sequel globally.
Spyglass is already developing an eighth installment, with sisters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman tapped to write the screenplay. No director has been announced for the next film.
Cox taking that position would represent something new for Scream. She has appeared in every installment of the franchise, giving her a perspective on its evolution that few performers or filmmakers could match.
Gale herself has also evolved considerably over those three decades, moving from the ambitious reporter introduced in Woodsboro to one of the series’ defining survivors. Cox has experienced the franchise under multiple creative teams, beginning with Craven and screenwriter Williamson and continuing through the filmmakers responsible for its more recent iterations.
There is another element that makes the idea particularly interesting. Despite a franchise built around Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and generations of female survivors and killers, a woman has never received a solo directing credit on a theatrical Scream feature. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the fifth and sixth films, while Craven directed the original four and Williamson took over for Scream 7.
Giving Cox the opportunity to approach Ghostface from a female filmmaker’s perspective, particularly after spending 30 years inside one of horror’s most recognizable female characters, could open possibilities for how the franchise explores its familiar ideas of survival, celebrity, trauma and the relationship between victims and the stories built around them.
For HMU, that is the most intriguing part of Cox’s suggestion. This would not simply be an established cast member stepping behind the camera as a novelty. Gale Weathers is an all-time horror character, and Cox has spent decades watching the machinery of Scream operate from inside it. What she might choose to emphasize, challenge or completely dismantle as a director could take the franchise somewhere genuinely different.
Cox is currently demonstrating that her interest in directing extends well beyond a hypothetical Scream installment.
Her latest film, Evil Genius, explores the infamous “pizza bomber” case through a true-crime story examining deception, desperation and the increasingly complicated distinction between victim and perpetrator. Cox directs from a screenplay by Courtenay Miles, with Patricia Arquette, David Harbour and Tom McCarthy among the cast.
Whether Cox actually gets her opportunity to call the shots on Ghostface remains to be seen. But with another Scream already moving forward, one of the franchise’s longest-serving stars has officially made it clear she wants the job.
After 30 years as Gale Weathers, handing Courteney Cox the director’s chair would certainly be one way for Scream to enter its next era.
