Dark Sky Films Acquires SXSW Horror Thriller ‘AMERICAN DOLLHOUSE’ for January 2027 Theatrical Release
Dark Sky Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to AMERICAN DOLLHOUSE, the psychological horror thriller from writer-director John Valley, with a theatrical release planned for January 2027. The acquisition follows the film's world premiere at the 2026 SXSW Film & TV Festival.
International sales company Blue Finch Films has also secured a Canadian distribution agreement with Vortex Media and will present the film to additional buyers at the American Film Market (AFM) in Los Angeles.
AMERICAN DOLLHOUSE follows Sarah, a woman who inherits her childhood home and finds herself targeted by a neighbor whose growing obsession turns increasingly violent. What begins as a return to a familiar place develops into a dangerous confrontation as Sarah becomes the focus of an escalating threat.
Hailley Lauren (My Stretch of Texas Ground) leads the cast alongside Kelsey Pribilski (Man Finds Tape), Tinus Seaux, Danielle Evon Ploeger and Richard C. Jones.
Valley, who also wrote the screenplay, developed the film around the darker implications of family relationships and the emotional associations people attach to their homes.
“I wanted to create a story that deconstructs the false narratives we tell ourselves about ‘home’ and ‘family,’ all within the context of a blood-soaked genre film,” Valley said in a statement.
The filmmaker also welcomed the distribution agreement with Dark Sky Films, describing it as an opportunity to bring the thriller to horror audiences across North America.
The film is produced by David Axe, Samuel Butler and Shane Greb, alongside Christian Sosa and Jon Wroblewski of Roosevelt Film Lab.
Greg Newman, executive vice president of Dark Sky Films, negotiated the U.S. acquisition with Mike Chapman of Blue Finch Films.
“John Valley is a new voice in horror whose talent and vision immediately caught our attention,” Newman said.
Dark Sky Films operates as the genre distribution label of MPI Media Group, led by Badie and Hamza Ali. The company has maintained a longstanding presence in independent horror through acquisitions, theatrical releases and home entertainment distribution.
Its catalog includes the original THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, alongside productions such as Ti West's THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL and THE INNKEEPERS. The company has also distributed contemporary independent genre titles, including Ted Geoghegan's WE ARE STILL HERE and Ben Kitnick's LET'S START A CULT.
The acquisition of AMERICAN DOLLHOUSE adds another festival-premiered independent horror production to Dark Sky's upcoming release schedule, while Blue Finch continues handling sales in international territories.
With U.S. and Canadian distribution agreements now in place, AMERICAN DOLLHOUSE is preparing for its North American rollout following its SXSW premiere.
Dark Sky Films plans to release AMERICAN DOLLHOUSE in U.S. theaters in January 2027. An exact theatrical release date and additional distribution details have not yet been announced.
