Dave Annable and Jennifer Holland Lead Civil War Supernatural Thriller Brine
A new supernatural thriller is heading into production with a blend of Civil War history, Southern Gothic atmosphere, and folk horror elements. According to Deadline, Dave Annable and Jennifer Holland have signed on to star in Brine, a Civil War-era supernatural thriller from veteran documentary filmmaker B.J. Golnick.
Annable, currently known for his work on Lioness, and Holland, recognized by genre fans for her role as Emilia Harcourt in Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad, will lead the cast alongside Jonah Wharton (Lioness), Sissy Sheridan (Chicken Girls), and Grayson Lay (Outer Banks).
Written by Golnick and producer Jeremy Miller, Brine follows a family of Confederate deserters fleeing the Union bombardment of Fort Pulaski during the Civil War. Carrying stolen gold, the family escapes into the Georgia marshlands in search of safety. Their journey leads them to a remote plantation house that initially appears to offer refuge from the dangers surrounding them.
However, the sanctuary soon reveals itself to be something far more sinister.
As the family settles into the isolated property, they discover that ancient forces lurk beneath the surface of the marshes, turning their desperate search for survival into a nightmare they cannot escape.
Director B.J. Golnick described the film as more than a traditional horror story.
“Brine is a story about survival, but it is also a story about inheritance. The violence we pass down, the myths we create to justify it, and the cost of trying to break free,” Golnick said. “We intend for the film to feel intimate, historically grounded and deeply unnerving, as if the supernatural elements weren’t invented, but unearthed from the marsh itself.”
The project marks a notable genre move for Golnick, who has built his career primarily through documentary filmmaking. With its combination of historical drama, supernatural horror, and Southern Gothic themes, Brine appears poised to explore the lingering scars of war through a distinctly unsettling lens.
Annable recently completed work on Season 3 of Lioness and has appeared in series including Brothers & Sisters, Yellowstone, Walker, The Waterfront, and What/If.
Holland continues to expand her profile following her breakout role in James Gunn’s DC universe, appearing in both The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 before returning as Agent Emilia Harcourt in Peacemaker.
No release date has been announced for Brine, but with its strong cast, atmospheric premise, and historical horror setting, it is already shaping up as a project genre fans will want to keep an eye on.
