Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is proud to announce a new and ongoing retrospective series called Guest Selects, an open invitation to the movie-eatery’s favorite filmmakers, writers, and performers to draw on their diverse backgrounds and eclectic tastes to program films that they think are essential big screen experiences. This September, Alamo Drafthouse audiences can experience BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA (1992) and THE DARK CRYSTAL on the big screen, two titles selected by filmmaker David Lowery, the writer, director, editor and producer of the highly anticipated fantasy epic THE GREEN KNIGHT (in theaters July 30).
In his Guest Selects video, set to run in Alamo Drafthouse theaters across the country, Lowery discusses the films that helped inspire THE GREEN KNIGHT – BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA, THE DARK CRYSTAL, MARIE ANTOINETTE, THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, and WILLOW.
“I’m honored to be a part of Alamo Drafthouse’s Guest Selects program and hope that everyone gets a chance to see THE GREEN KNIGHT on the big screen, and then takes advantage of the great opportunity to revisit these enduring classics that helped shape the film,” said Lowery.

Lowery’s work also includes PETE’S DRAGON, A GHOST STORY, PIONEER, ST. NICK, AIN'T THEM BODIES SAINTS and THE OLD MAN & THE GUN. He is currently in production as both writer and director on PETER PAN & WENDY, which stars Alexander Molony, Ever Anderson, Alan Tudyk, Molly Parker, Yara Shahidi and Jude Law and will be released by Disney in 2022.
Alamo Drafthouse’s screenings of Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s beloved fantasy epic THE DARK CRYSTAL are set to begin August 13. Francis Ford Copolla’s immortal classic BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA will return to cinemas starting September 17. Both films will have special recorded introductions from David Lowery. Tickets are on sale now at drafthouse.com.
Recent “Guest Selects” participants have included the Sparks Ron and Russel Mael, who shared their love of ISHTAR with sold-out audiences at Alamo Drafthouse, as well as M. Night Shyamalan, who programmed RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and JAWS, two of his “North Star” films that guide him as a filmmaker.
“For nearly twenty-five years we’ve been honored to welcome guest programmers – from Quentin Tarantino’s hand-selected QT Fest in the early 2000s to last month’s packed screenings of ISHTAR, curated by the band Sparks,” says Alamo Drafthouse founder and Executive Chairman Tim League. “I’m very excited that we’re officially continuing this tradition – and the explorations into the influences of our favorite filmmakers – with David Lowery and our new Guest Selects series.”
