DC Studios Developing New ‘JOHN CONSTANTINE’ Movie With ‘EVIL DEAD WRATH’ Filmmaker Francis Galluppi

DC Studios is developing a new JOHN CONSTANTINE movie, with filmmaker Francis Galluppi attached to write the screenplay. According to Deadline, the director behind THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY and the upcoming EVIL DEAD WRATH has been tapped to develop a new feature centered on DC Comics' occult detective.

The project is reportedly in the earliest stages of development, with no director, cast or release date currently attached. Representatives for DC Studios declined to comment on the report.

The announcement comes as DC continues expanding its theatrical slate following the release of CLAYFACE, which has earned more than $90 million worldwide. Galluppi's involvement also arrives ahead of his next major studio project, EVIL DEAD WRATH, the seventh installment in the long-running supernatural horror franchise.

John Constantine first appeared in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 in 1985, created by writer Alan Moore and artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben. The character subsequently became the central figure of DC's Hellblazer comic series, establishing himself as one of the publisher's most recognizable supernatural antiheroes.

A working-class British occult detective, Constantine operates in a world populated by demons, supernatural entities and dangerous magical forces. Known for his cynical personality, manipulative tactics and extensive knowledge of the occult, the character frequently relies on deception and morally questionable decisions to survive encounters with powerful adversaries.

Constantine previously received a theatrical adaptation in 2005, with Keanu Reeves portraying the character in director Francis Lawrence's CONSTANTINE. The Warner Bros. production relocated the traditionally British character to Los Angeles and developed a following that has sustained interest in a sequel for more than two decades.

A follow-up featuring Reeves has been discussed for several years, although the newly reported DC Studios project has not been identified as a continuation of the 2005 film. It remains unclear whether Galluppi's screenplay will introduce a new interpretation of Constantine or connect to any previously announced plans.

The character has also appeared on television, most notably portrayed by Matt Ryan in NBC's CONSTANTINE series, which premiered in 2014 and ran for one season. Ryan later reprised the role in other DC television productions.

Galluppi gained industry attention with his feature directorial debut, THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY, a crime thriller that premiered at Fantastic Fest before receiving distribution through Well Go USA Entertainment.

The film's reception helped establish Galluppi as an emerging genre filmmaker and led to his involvement with the EVIL DEAD franchise.

His upcoming film, EVIL DEAD WRATH, originated from an original story he developed and presented to franchise creator Sam Raimi and his producing team in 2024. The project marks Galluppi's entry into major studio filmmaking and continues the supernatural horror series established by Raimi in 1981.

Raimi previously praised Galluppi's ability to balance suspense with sudden violence while discussing the filmmaker's involvement in the franchise.

“Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence,” Raimi told Deadline. “He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut.”

Galluppi's background in crime thrillers and supernatural horror provides a notable connection to Constantine's comic-book origins, which frequently combine detective fiction, occult mythology and horror.

The reported project would also give DC Studios another opportunity to explore the supernatural side of its comic-book catalog, although the film's place within the studio's broader continuity has not been established.

For now, Galluppi is attached only as screenwriter, and no additional creative personnel have been announced.

Warner Bros. is scheduled to release EVIL DEAD WRATH on April 7, 2028.

The new JOHN CONSTANTINE film remains in early development at DC Studios, with further casting, production and release details yet to be confirmed.
