Dennis Iliadis Thriller ‘Buzzheart’ Arrives on Digital and VOD This Week

Buzzheart will arrive on Digital and VOD platforms May 19 through Dark Star Pictures.

Directed by Dennis Iliadis, the genre-bending psychological thriller marks the latest feature from the director known for projects including The Last House on the Left, +1, Delirium, and Hardcore.

Set in 1990s Athens, the film follows shy 19-year-old Argyris after he unexpectedly begins a relationship with Mary, a mysterious young woman who appears far outside his comfort zone. After traveling to her family’s remote countryside home, what initially seems like a romantic getaway slowly transforms into an increasingly disturbing psychological ordeal.

According to the official synopsis, Mary’s parents subject Argyris to escalating tests and manipulative games under the belief that they are protecting their emotionally fragile daughter. As the isolated weekend progresses, Argyris becomes trapped inside a deeply dysfunctional family dynamic where trust quickly deteriorates and survival becomes increasingly uncertain.

The film stars Evelina Papoulia alongside Giorgos Liantos, Konstantina Messini, and Claudio Kaya.

Buzzheart previously premiered in the Main Competition lineup at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival before later screening at the MOTELX in Lisbon.

The trailer released alongside the announcement leans heavily into atmosphere, emotional discomfort, and escalating psychological instability. Stylized cinematography, fragmented tension, and increasingly hostile family interactions dominate the footage while maintaining much of the story’s central mystery.

Dennis Iliadis has built a reputation around emotionally intense thrillers rooted in psychological dread and escalating human tension, and Buzzheart appears positioned firmly within that tradition. The film combines relationship anxiety, family dysfunction, horror elements, and dark comedic undertones into a slow-burning survival scenario.

Buzzheart arrives on Digital and VOD platforms May 19.
