‘Donnie Darko’ Sequel Continues With Richard Kelly’s ‘The Philosophy of Time Travel’ Novel

Twenty-five years after Donnie Darko first introduced audiences to Frank, the Tangent Universe and a countdown toward the end of the world, filmmaker Richard Kelly is preparing to return to that mythology with a new sequel — but not initially on the big screen.

Kelly has written The Philosophy of Time Travel, an approximately 800-page novel that will continue the story of his 2001 cult film. The book is expected to arrive during the fourth quarter of 2026 through Range Literary Publishing, with its release planned around the original film’s 25th anniversary on October 26. A specific publication date has not yet been announced.

According to Variety, Kelly has spent approximately 10 years writing the novel, which takes place in 1988 and begins in the immediate aftermath of Donnie Darko’s death. The project is also intended to serve as the first stage of Kelly’s considerably larger plan for the future of the franchise.

Rather than simply retelling the events surrounding Donnie, The Philosophy of Time Travel explores what happens to the people left behind after the events of the original film. Kelly describes the story as covering approximately 14 months following Donnie’s death, with surviving characters attempting to understand the strange collective experience they shared.

Central to the book is the idea that the characters experienced the Tangent Universe together as a 28-day collective dream. As memories of those events begin surfacing, the group attempts to understand what happened, eventually forming what Kelly describes as something between a support group and a cult.

That structure also allows Kelly to reconsider characters audiences thought they understood from the original movie. Some figures portrayed as antagonistic within Donnie Darko may emerge differently outside the Tangent Universe as they confront their actions and attempt to determine why they behaved the way they did during the shared experience.

The novel will use a found-document format, including alternating material from Donnie’s parents, Rose and Eddie Darko, played in the original film by Mary McDonnell and Holmes Osborne. Their sections document the aftermath of their son’s death as they independently investigate what happened to him.

Kelly’s plans extend considerably beyond the novel.

The filmmaker told Variety that The Philosophy of Time Travel represents the first piece of a potential series of Donnie Darko sequels he has been developing for more than two decades. His current concept would see the material contained within the novel adapted through animation and motion capture before the story makes a 28-year jump forward.

That later chapter would move the timeline into approximately 2015 or 2016 and potentially return the franchise to live action.

Kelly hopes that approach could eventually reunite members of the original ensemble, which included Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle and Seth Rogen.

No cast members have formally committed to returning.

Kelly said he deliberately has not approached the actors about reprising their roles, instead viewing the completed novel as a potential introduction to the larger sequel plan. If the project progresses, the actors would be able to see the expanded trajectories Kelly has developed for their characters before deciding whether to participate.

The filmmaker has previously discussed the complications surrounding a proper continuation of Donnie Darko, including rights issues and the scale of what he wants to accomplish. The original film did receive the 2009 standalone sequel S. Darko, centered on Donnie’s younger sister Samantha, but Kelly was not involved with that production. The Philosophy of Time Travel represents Kelly’s own return to the mythology he created.

His ambitions for that return appear substantial. Rather than constructing a single conventional sequel, Kelly has spent years mapping out a larger narrative capable of moving between time periods, filmmaking techniques and returning characters.

The book’s title will also be immediately recognizable to longtime fans. Within Donnie Darko, The Philosophy of Time Travel is the fictional book written by Roberta Sparrow — better known as Grandma Death — that provides Donnie with information about the Tangent Universe, the Manipulated Living and the approaching collapse of reality.

The new novel will be the first full book released by Range Literary Publishing, the author-focused publishing imprint launched by Range Media Partners. The company is developing a slate that includes novels, graphic novels, children’s books and other projects with potential extensions into film and television.

For Kelly, however, publishing The Philosophy of Time Travel appears to be less of a detour from filmmaking than an attempt to finally establish the foundation required for the Donnie Darko continuation he has been developing for years.

Whether the proposed animated adaptation, live-action continuation and original cast reunion ultimately materialize will depend on what happens after the novel enters the marketplace.

For now, the countdown begins again.
