Fantasia 2026 Unveils First Wave of Premiere Titles for Landmark 30th Edition
When it comes to genre cinema, there’s an argument to be made—and we’ll stand on it—that the true global kickoff doesn’t belong to Sundance or SXSW. It belongs to the Fantasia International Film Festival.

With its unmatched international reach and deep commitment to horror, sci-fi, and boundary-pushing storytelling, Fantasia has long been the proving ground for films that don’t just follow trends—they create them. And now, the festival’s 30th edition is officially underway with the announcement of its first wave of premiere titles.
Running from July 16 through August 2, 2026, the Montreal-based festival returns to Concordia Hall, J.A. de Sève cinemas, and Cinéma du Musée, promising another stacked lineup of screenings, workshops, and global premieres.
And if this first wave is any indication, Fantasia 2026 is coming in heavy.

Leading the charge is Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s Hot Spot, a near-future sci-fi thriller centered on a murder investigation in a society ruled by sentient A.I. The film blends surveillance paranoia with rebellion, anchored by a cast that includes Noomi Rapace. It’s bold, visually driven, and exactly the kind of high-concept storytelling Fantasia thrives on.
On the franchise side, Jenn Wexler returns with The Last Temptation of Becky, bringing back Lulu Wilson’s fan-favorite character—this time as a CIA operative taking the fight directly to a new wave of fascist threats. Expect gore, chaos, and a continuation of one of horror’s more unexpected modern anti-heroes.
Time manipulation gets another inventive twist with You Are the Film, the directorial debut of Makoto Ueda. Known for bending time in scripts like Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, Ueda now steps behind the camera to deliver a real-time narrative experiment that’s already generating buzz after major festival wins
Fantasia’s commitment to evolving genre storytelling is also clear in No Rest for the Wicked, a queer vampire folk horror from Kasper Kalle. Set against the harsh backdrop of the Faroe Islands, the film blends gothic romance with brutal genre elements, signaling a fresh direction for vampire mythology.
On the psychological front, The Eyes from Yeom Ji-oh offers a disorienting thriller built around trauma, vision loss, and obsession. Meanwhile, Home Bodies from Casey Walker leans into surreal sci-fi horror, exploring autonomy and control in a tightly contained environment.
Then there’s Sour Minnows, an experimental descent into fractured reality from Harrison Atkins, blending dark humor with existential dread in a way that feels uniquely Fantasia.

International genre fans also have plenty to track, including Giddens Ko’s Kung Fu, marking Taiwan’s first martial arts fantasy film in over four decades, and Captured!, a genre-bending horror-comedy from Japanese creator Koichi that merges social media culture with supernatural chaos.
The lineup doesn’t stop there. Highlights also include the holiday horror Unholy Night, the surreal yakuza comedy Break Free, and Ferine, a visually striking return to classic Italian horror aesthetics. On the documentary side, Rubberhead: The Life & Monsters of Steve Johnson offers a deep dive into one of practical effects’ most influential—and complicated—figures.
And for those looking for pure nightmare fuel, Sleep No More brings body horror back to the forefront with a workplace-from-hell scenario that blends social commentary with visceral terror.
The takeaway here is simple: Fantasia isn’t just celebrating 30 years—it’s reinforcing why it matters.
This is where genre evolves. This is where international voices break through. And this is where audiences find the films that will define conversations for the rest of the year.
The full lineup is expected in early July, but if this first wave is any indication, Fantasia 2026 isn’t easing into its anniversary—it’s making a statement.
