Fantastic Fest 24' "Bone Lake" - movie review

Tensions rise and passions ignite in *Bone Lake*, as a couple’s getaway turns into a deadly game with unexpected guests. A provocative and dangerous thriller from Mercedes Bryce Morgan. (Fantastic Fest)

For the last two years, we've been saying that one of the scariest things in horror is Airbnb—or Vrbo, whichever you prefer. The horror stories of double bookings are enough to make anyone uneasy. Imagine spending your hard-earned money for a peaceful getaway, only for unexpected guests to show up and turn everything upside down. If you think that could lead to a disturbing outcome, you're not far off. In Mercedes Bryce Morgan's provocative thriller "Bone Lake", a couple hoping to rekindle their love finds themselves with uninvited guests who have their own sinister plans.

Bone Lake follows Diego (Marco Pigossi) and Sage (Maddie Hasson), a couple navigating the ups and downs of their relationship. Their romantic weekend getaway should have been perfect, but Cin (Andra Nechita) and Will (Alex Roe) have other ideas. Though the couples aren’t far apart in age, Cin and Will's chemistry is edgier, sexier, and more dangerous, creating an immediate Alpha vs. Beta tension between the two men. Meanwhile, a growing attraction simmers within the group, adding layers of suspense. The women shine in Bone Lake, both cunning and captivating, with their interactions pulling the viewer deeper into the drama. The dynamics between the four characters are gripping, as they oscillate between moments of friendship and the brink of becoming mortal enemies. Bone Lake is as equally sexy as it is fierce and dangerous. The writing does an excellent job of giving each character space to develop fully, leading to a more nuanced interpretation of their actions throughout the film.

Bone Lake evokes the stylish, sensual thrillers of the late '70s and early '80s. Andra Nechita and Maddie Hasson are undeniable forces, stealing the show in every scene they're in.

This is the kind of filmmaking we want to see more of from talents like Mercedes Bryce Morgan. There's a raw intensity and sensuality that filmmakers like her are channeling, and Bone Lake is proof of how powerful and provocative it can be.
