FrightFest 24' "The Daemon" - movie review

The Daemon made its premiere at this year's UK FrightFest (FrightFest)

Family issues are a popular theme in horror, and if you explore the world of H.P. Lovecraft, you'll often encounter the idea of an ancestral curse. In "The Daemon," a feature from co-directors Matt Devino and David Michael Yohe, this theme is central. The film follows a narrative reminiscent of "The Call of Cthulhu," a common trope in Lovecraft's stories. While "The Daemon" presents itself as a sinister supernatural tale, it also delves into the anguish of losing loved ones and the haunting burden of familial legacy.

Adriana Isabel delivers a compelling performance as Jess, a character clearly marked by her past struggles. Isabel brings a deep empathy to the role, occasionally veering into overemphasis, yet remaining relatable to anyone familiar with such traumatic worlds. Alongside her, Oscar Wilson plays her husband, Mark, and Sara Fletcher portrays his sister, Kathy. Together, they embark on a journey to find Kathy's husband, Tom (Tyler Q. Rosen), who is grappling with a longstanding family curse. Tom's attempt to confront his past only pulls the group deeper into a Lovecraftian nightmare, filled with horrors beyond their understanding.

"The Daemon" is anchored by strong performances from its lead actors, which may help new viewers ease into Lovecraftian horror. Once the story unfolds, it challenges the audience's perception, yet employs clever and imaginative effects that encourage the mind to wander into the unknown. The ending is particularly chilling, rewarding viewers with a memorable conclusion. Overall, "The Daemon" successfully captures many of Lovecraft's recurring themes, including family, madness, hereditary curses, and, of course, tentacles. As more viewers discover this film, it is likely to gain a positive reception.
