‘Ghost in the Shell’ Returns to Theaters in 4K This September

Mamoru Oshii’s landmark cyberpunk anime Ghost in the Shell is heading back to the big screen, with Lionsgate set to bring the acclaimed sci-fi thriller to theaters in 4K on September 18, 2026.

Based on Masamune Shirow’s manga, the 1995 film transports audiences to 2029, where cybernetic government agent Major Motoko Kusanagi and Section 9 are investigating a mysterious entity known as the Puppet Master.

Capable of infiltrating human hosts, the Puppet Master presents a threat that increasingly challenges the boundaries separating human consciousness, artificial intelligence and the technology connecting them. Kusanagi and her fellow agents find themselves in a race to locate the entity, but the investigation ultimately raises questions far larger than the case itself.

Directed by Oshii from a screenplay by Kazunori Itô, Ghost in the Shell became one of the defining works of Japanese animation and an influential entry in science-fiction cinema. Its combination of cybernetic body horror, philosophical questions surrounding identity and consciousness, and densely constructed futuristic environments helped establish a visual and thematic language that would continue to echo throughout the genre.

The film also arrived during an era when anime was becoming increasingly accessible to international audiences, helping introduce another generation of viewers to Japanese animation that existed well beyond the television series and family-oriented features many Western audiences associated with the medium.

At the center of the story is Major Kusanagi, whose heavily cybernetic existence makes the Puppet Master investigation deeply personal. As Section 9 searches for an intelligence capable of moving through interconnected systems and human bodies, the distinction between organic life and manufactured consciousness becomes increasingly difficult to define.

That tension remains one of the reasons Ghost in the Shell has endured more than three decades after its original release. Technology has changed considerably since Oshii envisioned 2029, but the film’s fascination with artificial intelligence, digital identity and the relationship between humans and machines has only become more relevant.

The Japanese voice cast includes Atsuko Tanaka as Major Motoko Kusanagi, Akio Ōtsuka, Kōichi Yamadera and Tamio Ōki. Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, Ken Iyadomi, Ken Matsumoto, Yoshimasa Mizuo and Shigeru Watanabe produced the film.

For longtime fans, the September engagement provides another opportunity to experience Oshii’s detailed cyberpunk world theatrically, this time through a 4K presentation. For audiences who discovered the film through home video or streaming, it also offers the chance to experience one of anime’s most influential science-fiction films on the big screen.
