A blood-soaked journey through chaos and horror in Pierre Tsigaridis’ Traumatika.

Pierre Tsigaridis returns to the horror genre with his latest feature, Traumatika. This stylized, humor-driven film showcases the distinctive look and feel we’ve come to expect from Tsigaridis and producer Maxime Rancon. Blending elements of slasher films, found footage, and more, the story follows a young boy confronting the evil within his mother and the chaotic aftermath that follows. By incorporating talk show segments and a documentary-like approach, Tsigaridis pushes the boundaries of Traumatika, ensuring non-stop mayhem from start to finish.

The film’s unpredictability is both its strength and potential weakness. Traumatika never fully commits to a single type of horror, instead weaving between genres with skill. While this feat of filmmaking is impressive, it makes the narrative harder to invest in. At times, it feels like watching multiple films in one—perhaps intentional, but it may leave some viewers wishing for a more focused approach. The talented duo behind the film seem to have overextended their love for various horror tropes, and the movie might have been more successful by settling on just one.

Once the film finds a more manageable pace, Tsigaridis’ strengths shine through. It’s a pleasure to see Rebekah Kennedy return in their collaboration, as she has become a hallmark of their style. The scenes with young Mikey provide the perfect setup, demonstrating that if Tsigaridis and writer Maxime Rancon wanted to truly terrify, they are more than capable. However, Traumatika leans more on humor and excessive gore, offering moments that will put a smile on any horror fan’s face. If there had been more of these moments, the film would have stood out even further.

There’s plenty to enjoy in Traumatika, with viewers able to dip in and out of the various horror antics leading to its devious conclusion. The look of one of the main antagonists perfectly sums up the experience: a blood-soaked ride that grips you by the throat as you stumble through the darkness, hunting for the next victim.
