HMU Exclusive Interview: Hugo Keijzer & Ella Balinska Talk

The Occupant

We caught up with director Hugo Keijzer and star Ella Balinska to dive into their atmospheric survival thriller The Occupant, following its rave-reviewed premiere at SXSW London.

We asked Hugo about what inspired the film’s frigid, isolated setting and how working with cinematographer Robbie Van Brussel allowed them to use the frozen landscape as a character in itself. He also shared why he chose to keep the supernatural and sci-fi elements grounded, leaning heavily on Abby’s emotional state to drive the suspense.

Ella spoke about preparing for Abby’s grueling physical demands while channeling her grief-driven arc, explaining how she went into the role completely raw to find authenticity. She detailed the mental challenge of portraying isolation so vividly on screen while staying present and connected to the character’s sense of loss and desperation.

Our conversation revealed how much the stark visuals, emotional core, and Ella’s performance combine to deliver a visceral, chilling experience that lingers long after the credits roll.

We thank Hugo and Ella for joining us and sharing their insights on the making of The Occupant. Be sure to watch our full interview for their in-depth answers and behind-the-scenes details!

Ella Balinska, known for leading Elizabeth Banks’ CHARLIE’S ANGELS opposite Kristen Stewart and Naomi Scott (see her appearances on [Entertainment Tonight] and Jimmy Kimmel Live), now headlines The Occupant.

The Occupant releases in theaters and on digital August 8th from DECAL. Don’t miss this survival thriller where Abby (Balinska), a guilt-ridden engineering geologist, survives a mysterious helicopter crash in a harsh, remote environment—only to discover she’s not alone.
