Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick’s ‘Family Movie’ Sets April 2027 Theatrical Release

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick are bringing their family-made slasher Family Movie to theaters next spring, with Variance Films setting an April 23, 2027 North American release.

Directed and produced by Bacon and Sedgwick, the horror film also stars the pair alongside their children, Travis Bacon and Sosie Bacon, who serve as producers on the project. The film made its world premiere at SXSW earlier this year before continuing its run on the festival circuit.

Family Movie follows the Smiths, a filmmaking family working together on a low-budget horror production. Their movie takes an unexpected turn when a dead body is discovered on set, transforming the production into a real-life slasher scenario while the family attempts to keep their film moving forward.

The ensemble cast also includes Liza Koshy, John Carroll Lynch, Jackie Earle Haley, Andrea Savage, Austin Amelio and Scoot McNairy.

Dan Beers wrote the screenplay, with Vince Jolivette, Casey Durant, Greg Lauritano and Russell Wayne Groves producing alongside Bacon, Sedgwick, Travis Bacon and Sosie Bacon.

The April release will give Family Movie a full theatrical window, a decision Bacon and Sedgwick said was influenced by the response the film received while playing festivals.

“The entire process of making Family Movie has been a true labor of love and after seeing the audience reactions at multiple film festivals around the world, we knew this movie had to be experienced in the theater,” Bacon and Sedgwick said in a joint statement.

The filmmakers added that they considered traditional distribution options before deciding to take the movie directly into theaters, citing their confidence in the film and the changing independent distribution landscape.

The project makes its behind-the-scenes family connection particularly central to the production, with Bacon and Sedgwick directing, producing and starring while both Travis and Sosie Bacon appear onscreen and produce.

Variance Films will handle the North American theatrical release. Jessica Lacy of Gersh and Dylan Marchetti of Variance Films brokered the deal, while Gersh, Range Select and CAA continue to represent downstream rights for the film’s subsequent release windows.

Family Movie opens in North American theaters April 23, 2027.
