Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Teaser Signals a Brutal New Nightmare for New Line

New Line has unveiled the first teaser for The Mummy, the latest film from writer-director Lee Cronin, following the breakout success of Evil Dead Rise. Warner Bros. will release the film in theaters and IMAX across North America on April 17.

This is not a revival of the swashbuckling adventure franchise associated with Brendan Fraser. Cronin’s The Mummy is positioned as an original supernatural horror story, grounded in dread rather than spectacle. The film centers on the young daughter of a journalist who vanishes into the desert without explanation. Eight years later, she inexplicably returns to her family, setting off a chain of events that transforms what should be a miracle into something far more sinister. The film’s chilling tagline asks a single question: What happened to Katie?

The cast includes Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcón. The project is produced by James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Macdara Kelleher, and Cronin serving as executive producers.

Cronin arrives at The Mummy with serious momentum. Evil Dead Rise delivered over $147 million worldwide for New Line and reestablished his reputation as a filmmaker willing to push studio horror into darker, more confrontational territory. Before that, Cronin made his mark with The Hole in the Ground, which premiered at Sundance and introduced his fixation on family trauma and creeping, inescapable terror.

That reputation is fueling early buzz around The Mummy. Industry chatter from early screenings has already hinted at how intense the film may be, including unconfirmed talk that even its producers were caught off guard by its severity. Whether true or not, the teaser itself suggests Cronin is steering the mythology back toward something closer to classical horror, evoking the ominous legacy of Boris Karloff rather than modern action fantasy.

Adding to the unease, the teaser release was accompanied by a cryptic Morse code message shared through Blumhouse channels. Decoded, it reads: “In ancient Egyptian civilization, dark spirits and visions of the dead were never an illusion. Some that passed over were gone forever, but an unlucky few were consumed by a darkness far more evil than anyone could have ever imagined. Today it begins.” The message reinforces the sense that Cronin’s film is less about resurrection and more about corruption, possession, and irreversible transformation.

If the teaser is any indication, The Mummy is shaping up to be a stark reimagining that strips the myth down to its most terrifying core. The official teaser is now available to watch, and Horror Movies Uncut will continue tracking updates as this new nightmare unfolds.
