LOST IN STARLIGHT

Love in the Time of Mars: A Retro-Futuristic Romance Arrives on Netflix May 30

From the vibrant pulse of Seoul to the silent void between planets, Lost in Starlight is an animated cosmic love letter to youth, ambition, and the distance between hearts. Directed by Han Ji-won, with voice performances from Korean stars Kim Tae-ri and Hong Kyung — and English voices by Never Have I Ever’s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and After Yang’s Justin H. Min — this soulful sci-fi story launches exclusively on Netflix on May 30.

Set in the year 2050, the film introduces us to Nan-young, an ambitious researcher chasing a life-defining dream of exploring Mars, and Jay, a once-passionate musician whose creative fire has dimmed. Their relationship is a delicate harmony of opposites — science and art, progress and pause — framed in a world that blends cyberpunk tech with retro warmth. Seoul’s streets glow with analog soul while robots walk among cherry blossoms. It’s a beautifully grounded vision of the future that still feels deeply human.

The key art teases this duality, showing Nan-young and Jay caught in a tender Earthbound moment — her robotic research companion quietly blending into the landscape as if it were always meant to be there. It’s a small moment before a massive leap: 225 million kilometers, to be exact.

As Nan-young inches closer to realizing her space-bound goal, Jay reawakens his love for music thanks to her unwavering belief in him. But when Nan-young is granted a second chance at Mars, the two must face the hardest truth: love can fuel dreams, but it can also mean letting go.

Lost in Starlight delivers big on visuals, emotion, and mood. The original soundtrack promises to be as essential to the experience as the story itself, capturing the ache, joy, and intimacy of a love trying to survive interplanetary separation. Think Your Name meets Her, with a heavy dose of analog synth and dreamlike atmosphere.

Whether you’re a hopeless romantic or a sci-fi dreamer, Lost in Starlight looks like the perfect collision of the two. The stars might be distant, but the feelings? Inescapably close. Premiering globally on May 30 — only on Netflix.
