LOVE IS THE MONSTER Brings Finnish Folk Horror to Prime Video This June
Finnish mythology and relationship trauma collide in Love Is the Monster, the latest folk horror feature from filmmaker Alex Noyer. Following its festival run at Screamfest, Morbido, and Night Visions, the film is set to arrive exclusively on Prime Video in the United States on June 23 through Cranked Up Films.
Starring Madeline Zima (Californication, Twin Peaks: The Return) and Leonardo Nam (Westworld, Descendants: The Rise of Red), Love Is the Monster follows a married couple attempting to repair their fractured relationship after infidelity sends them down a difficult path. Seeking a fresh start, the pair travel to Finland for an exclusive couples retreat centered around healing, self-discovery, and the teachings of a charismatic spiritual leader.
What begins as an opportunity for reconciliation quickly transforms into something far more dangerous.
Inspired by the ancient Finnish goddess of love and fertility, Lempo, the retreat introduces participants to rituals and beliefs that become increasingly unsettling. As tensions rise among the attendees, mysterious events begin to unfold, turning the search for emotional healing into a fight for survival. Along the way, Ana discovers she may have a deeper connection to the retreat’s true purpose than she ever imagined.
The film marks Noyer’s second feature following Sound of Violence and serves as a return to his Finnish roots. Noyer co-wrote the screenplay alongside longtime collaborator Hannu Aukia and Blair Bathory. Producing duties were shared by Noyer, Aukia, and Laurence Gendron.
Joining Zima and Nam in the ensemble cast are Kimberly Sue-Murray (The Boys), Moe Jeudy-Lamour (Ted Lasso), Kristina Tonteri-Young (Warrior Nun), Milla Puolakanaho (Attack on Helsinki), and Sheila McCarthy (Women Talking).
In a statement accompanying the release announcement, Noyer noted the timing of the launch aligns with the film’s setting during the Finnish midsummer celebration, a period deeply tied to the mythology explored throughout the story.
With ancient folklore, psychological tension, and deadly rituals woven together under the glow of Finland’s midnight sun, Love Is the Monster looks poised to offer horror fans a new folk nightmare when it arrives on Prime Video on June 23.
