ND/NF '24 Selection "OMEN," A Stunning Tale of Secrecy and Sorcery | In Theaters April 12th

Exploring the Magical Realism of Identity and Culture in BALOJI's Debut Film "OMEN"

After years spent in Belgium, Koffi, portrayed by the talented Marc Zinga, embarks on a profound journey back to his roots in Kinshasa. The compelling narrative unfolds in the debut feature film, "OMEN," directed by the visionary Baloji. This captivating exploration of identity, culture, and belief systems introduces audiences to a world where secrecy and sorcery converge, blurring the lines between reality and the supernatural.

Set to open in New York at the IFC Center on April 12th, followed by a Los Angeles premiere at Laemmle Royal on April 19th, "OMEN" promises a visual spectacle that dives deep into the complexities of being labeled as an "undesirable" or "sorcerer" in society.

Baloji, making his mark as a filmmaker, employs magical realism to paint a vivid portrait of Koffi's journey. A seemingly innocent nosebleed becomes the catalyst for a series of events, as it is mistakenly perceived as a curse. The ensuing chaos leads to Koffi's shunning by his own family, exposing the intricacies of cultural taboos and beliefs.

The film's narrative unfolds against the backdrop of Kinshasa, immersing viewers in a visually rich and culturally diverse landscape. "OMEN" challenges preconceived notions of identity and explores the deeply rooted belief systems that shape individuals and communities.

For those eager to catch an early glimpse of this groundbreaking film, "OMEN" will be featured at the New Directors/New Films 2024 screenings. The press screening is scheduled for Wednesday, March 20th, at 11:45 am at the Elinor Bunin Monroe Film Center. Attendees are required to confirm their RSVPs.

The public screening kicks off on Friday, April 5th, at 6:00 pm at the Walter Reade Theater, followed by an insightful Q&A session with the brilliant mind behind "OMEN," Baloji himself. A second public screening is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th, at 6:00 pm at the Museum of Modern Art - Theater 2, accompanied by another engaging Q&A with the director.

As "OMEN" prepares to make its mark on the cinematic landscape, audiences can anticipate an emotional and thought-provoking journey that transcends geographical boundaries. Baloji's debut promises to be a celebration of storytelling, culture, and the timeless struggle for acceptance in a world bound by tradition.
