Bill Skarsgård as Orlok in a haunting scene from Nosferatu (2024), directed by Robert Eggers.
Bill Skarsgård as Orlok redefines terror in Robert Eggers’ visually stunning Nosferatu.

Robert Eggers has achieved the daunting task of reimagining one of his most iconic films to tell the story of Orlok, the monstrous and timeless Nosferatu. Eggers’ distinctive filmmaking style—often praised for its atmospheric and immersive qualities—remains his signature here. While this approach continues to captivate, one wonders if the allure of his technique might eventually wear thin.

Discussions about Nosferatu will undoubtedly center on its cinematography, with Jarin Blaschke’s stoic and evocative shots standing out. However, the real triumph lies in its meticulous set design and extraordinary visual effects. The synergy between Beatrice Brentnerová’s set decoration, Kristina Hudečková’s production design, and the work of the concept and storyboard artists elevates Nosferatu into something more akin to a dark, living graphic novel. These behind-the-scenes efforts imbue the film with grandeur, blending gothic aesthetics with modern visual storytelling.

The cast is another highlight, delivering performances that enhance the haunting world of Nosferatu. Bill Skarsgård brings humanity and subtle menace to Orlok, redefining the character while staying true to its roots. Lily-Rose Depp stands out with her expressive ability, marking her as a star to watch. Meanwhile, veterans like Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson provide depth and gravitas, while Anthony Taylor-Johnson turns in a more grounded performance, a welcome contrast to his recent Marvel misstep. Emma Corrin, too, proves more than capable, rounding out a cast that seemed destined to succeed.

While Nosferatu excels visually, it lacks the raw fear that should define a horror film. The awe-inspiring production design and visual effects overshadow its ability to terrify, turning what could have been a harrowing experience into something more contemplative. For a monster as layered and enigmatic as Orlok, this approach feels like a missed opportunity. Eggers touches on Orlok’s complexity but leans too heavily on the film’s aesthetic strengths.

Interestingly, Nosferatu would have been just as powerful as a silent film. Its moody visuals and expressive performances could carry the narrative without dialogue, further highlighting its timeless qualities. In its current form, however, it’s a one-and-done watch for me.

Nosferatu is a visually stunning piece of art, yet its beauty dulls the edge of its horror. While it won’t be my horror film of the year, it remains an impressive technical achievement. The haunting landscapes and masterful production design dominate, leaving the rest of the film to play second fiddle—and that’s okay.

Rating: 3/5
