‘Scary Movie’ Sets September Streaming Premiere on Paramount+
The latest Scary Movie is heading to streaming following its theatrical run, with the sixth installment in the horror-comedy franchise set to premiere September 3 on Paramount+.
The streaming debut comes 91 days after the Paramount and Miramax release opened theatrically. The film has earned more than $230 million worldwide from a reported production budget of approximately $30 million before prints and advertising costs.
The new installment also helped push the Scary Movie franchise past $1 billion at the worldwide box office in June, 26 years after the original film arrived in theaters.
The sixth movie marked the franchise’s return after a 13-year absence following Scary Movie 5. It opened to $105.5 million worldwide, setting a new opening record for the series, and became the first R-rated comedy outside of the action and superhero hybrid space to cross $100 million since Girls Trip in 2017.
The film also brought several of the franchise’s original players back together. Marlon Wayans returns as Shorty alongside Shawn Wayans as Ray, Regina Hall as Brenda and Anna Faris as Cindy.
Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri and Chris Elliott also return, while the ensemble adds Kenan Thompson, Kim Wayans, Damon Wayans Jr., Heidi Gardner, Olivia Rose Keegan, Cameron Scott Roberts, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, Gregg Wayans, Benny Zielke and Ruby Snowber.
Michael Tiddes directed the film from a screenplay credited to Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Craig Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans and Rick Alvarez.
The movie is based on characters created by Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Buddy Johnson, Phil Beauman, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. Alvarez, Craig Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans serve as producers.
Jonathan Glickman, Thom Zadra, Alexandra Loewy, Marc Weinstock, Marsha L. Swinton and Neal H. Moritz are executive producers.
The original Scary Movie debuted in 2000 and launched a franchise built around parodying contemporary horror films and other popular movies. The sixth installment marked the return of the Wayans family to the series after their involvement with its earliest entries.
Following its theatrical run, Scary Movie will begin streaming September 3 on Paramount+.
