The comforts of home become the last place anyone wants to be in Goody Goody, a new psychological horror film headed to Shudder on September 18.

Written and directed by Raymond Creamer, the film stars Samantha Robinson, Zoe Renee, Colby Hollman, and Colleen Foy in a story that transforms an intimate home birth into an increasingly sinister fight against something going terribly wrong.

The setup begins simply enough.

An expecting couple has chosen to welcome their child at home, accompanied by their midwife and surrounded by the familiar environment meant to keep the long birth process as comfortable as possible.

Then the situation begins to change.

As a powerful blizzard rages outside, the family becomes trapped inside the house with no easy way to escape or reach help. What initially appears to be complications surrounding the birth gradually becomes something far more disturbing, forcing everyone inside to question exactly what is happening.

It is a particularly effective setup for contained horror.

Childbirth already carries an inherent combination of anticipation, vulnerability, pain, and uncertainty. Add complete isolation, worsening weather, and the suggestion that the danger may extend beyond anything medically explainable, and Goody Goody has all the ingredients for an intensely claustrophobic nightmare.

The film also gives Shudder another opportunity to explore horror built around domestic spaces that are supposed to provide security. A home birth depends heavily on creating an environment of trust and control, making that same environment increasingly threatening as the night deteriorates an especially unsettling reversal.

Before its Shudder arrival, Goody Goody will screen as part of Scary Movies XIV at Film at Lincoln Center on Monday, August 17 at 9:00 p.m. at New York City’s Walter Reade Theater. Creamer will be in attendance to introduce the screening.

The film is produced by Harrison Rothman, Steven Schneider, and Keely Kemp.

With a blizzard closing off the outside world and a birth taking an increasingly sinister turn inside, Goody Goody looks primed to deliver the kind of intimate, pressure-cooker horror where there is nowhere for its characters — or the audience — to get comfortable.
