Talia Ryder Joins Michael Shannon in Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders

The cast continues to grow for one of the most anticipated reimaginings on the horror horizon.

According to Variety, Talia Ryder has joined Michael Shannon in Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders, writer-director John Erick Dowdle’s contemporary reimagining of the landmark silent horror classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Production recently wrapped in Germany, with worldwide sales set to launch through Anton during the inaugural TIFF market.

Shannon stars as the infamous Doctor Caligari, a traveling mesmerist who journeys from town to town with a sleepwalker under his control, leaving a trail of grisly murders in his wake. As mysterious disappearances continue, a young woman becomes convinced that Caligari is responsible. The challenge is that no one believes her.

Ryder will portray Jane, an intuitive young woman whose ability to perceive things others cannot has left her isolated from those around her. Haunted by the murder of her sister and the betrayal of her parents, Jane discovers that the very ability that made her an outsider may be the key to uncovering the truth behind Caligari’s deadly path.

The original 1920 German Expressionist classic is widely regarded as one of the foundational works of horror cinema, making this adaptation one of the genre’s most closely watched projects currently in development.

Ryder first gained widespread acclaim for her breakout performance in Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always, earning both Independent Spirit Award and Critics Choice Award nominations. More recently, she appeared in Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t and is currently filming Season 2 of Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith opposite Mark Eydelshteyn. She will also appear in 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank alongside Liam Neeson and In Memoriam with Marc Maron, Lily Gladstone, and Sharon Stone.

The film is produced by Drew Dowdle for Brothers Dowdle Productions alongside producers Sébastien Raybaud, Brandt Wrightsman, Stuart Manashil, Jonas Katzenstein, and Maximilian Leo. The production received support from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF).

With Michael Shannon taking on one of horror’s earliest and most recognizable villains and Talia Ryder stepping into a pivotal lead role, Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders is shaping up as one of the more intriguing modern reinterpretations of a genre-defining classic.
