Thai horror is heading to the Toronto International Film Festival market with Tame, the first feature from newly formed film and live-experience venture B-EST Pictures.

EST N8 and Bangkok-based content company BrandThink have partnered to launch B-EST Pictures, with the companies planning to co-develop, finance and produce projects beginning in Southeast Asia before expanding further into international markets.

The venture’s first title, Tame, will launch international sales at the TIFF market ahead of its theatrical release in Thailand on October 29.

Rooted in Thai folklore, the horror-suspense film is set within a rural bullfighting village where animals are controlled through fear and ritual. The story follows a teenage girl living under the control of her family who turns to the brutal methods of an ancient spirit as circumstances within the household escalate.

Tame marks the feature directorial debut of Thamuya Thasananukulkij and is led by Pimmada Chaisakcharoen, the T-pop performer whose screen credits include Human Resource.

Chaisakcharoen is joined by Chayanit Chansangavej, whose credits include Cracked and Supposed, and Jespipat Tilapornputt (The Stain).

Anucha Boonyawatana and BrandThink founder Ekalak “Luck” Klunson produce the film. Boonyawatana previously produced Malila: The Farewell Flower, which received the Kim Jiseok Award at the Busan International Film Festival and the NETPAC Award at the Golden Horse Film Festival. Klunson’s credits include Redlife, Halabala and 5th Round.

The project arrives as B-EST Pictures looks to combine EST N8’s international financing, sales and distribution operations with BrandThink’s connections to Thai creative communities, youth culture and subcultures.

“Great stories and cultural movements are happening in Asia every day, but the gap has always been curation and distribution built for an international audience,” EST N8 co-founder Kris Eiamsakulrat said.

According to Eiamsakulrat, the partnership is designed to move beyond distributing completed projects by developing properties capable of connecting with international audiences from their inception.

For BrandThink, Tame represents an opportunity to extend the company’s existing work across publishing, community, branded content and screen production into a new internationally focused venture.

“In EST N8, we’ve found partners who share our vision for elevating Asian narratives,” Klunson said. “Launching B-EST Pictures with Tame at TIFF lets us turn our editorial instincts into globally distributable IP.”

EST N8 Head of Studios Sophie Changhui-Shi pointed to Thai horror’s existing international reach while positioning Tame as a film combining genre elements with its specific cultural setting.

“Tame furthers the genre by pairing visceral suspense with deep emotional and cultural resonance,” Changhui-Shi said.

EST N8’s broader film slate includes Rezwan Shahriar Sumit’s Master, Indonesian horror release Danur: The Last Chapter, Kimo Stamboel’s Janur Ireng, Tetsuya Mariko’s Dear Stranger, The Invisible Half, Dead End and Filipino thriller Jaguar.

BrandThink’s previous screen projects include the 2023 feature Redlife and Netflix anthology series Terror Tuesday: Extreme.

B-EST Pictures plans to announce three additional titles in the coming months as the new venture builds its initial slate.

Tame will be introduced to international buyers at the TIFF market before opening theatrically in Thailand on October 29.

I found this approach helpful because contrast can sometimes be difficult to judge by eye alone. Using a contrast checker provides a more reliable way to review colors and improve readability, especially when designing pages that need to work well for a broad audience.
