"The continuous plight of the doomed generation" 'American Cherry' - movie review

Let us start off by getting these titles out of the way so you can get a clear idea of what's going on with latest film from Marcella Cytrynowicz AMERICAN CHERRY. So stop me if these titles ring a bell. HEATHER, KIDS, GUMMO, PUMP UP THE VOLUME, THIRTEEN, ELEPHANT and of course AMERICAN BEAUTY. The list could go on and on right? Good ole' middle Merica! AMERICAN CHERRY is a stark and daunting look at a group of kids all bonded by an intention to leave or succeed in their hometown. Out of the pack stands a troubled young man who falls for a classmate. He soon finds out he's not alone in the darkness of this small community and staying there could be fatal. AMERICAN CHERRY dares you forget how immature and lost we all were during our high school years. Though in this town betrayal and revenge may be the only thing in common.

AMERICAN CHERRY is hands down the most gorgeous film to kick off 2023. I was instantly hypnotized by the sheer beauty of this movie. The story revolves arounds Finn and Eliza. Two kids living in low income middle America hell. They began a romance of awkward kinship that turns into love. Soon it becomes obsession and with Finn thats a problem. He does not handle things well and only Eliza can keep him contained. AMERICAN CHERRY may feel like a slow burn, but the young cast excels at keeping your heart racing throughout. The reason the movies I mentioned earlier are so iconic is because it spoke to a generation. AMERICAN CHERRY speaks about a class many have forgotten about. Those gun toting , bible thumping belt dwellers are still around and their kids are all neurotic.

There isn't much to dislike with AMERICAN CHERRY and I think viewers will know instantly if its their jam. DAZED AND CONFUSED reminded us that the start of the summer gives us great expectations for the coming year. HEATHERS showed us that the rich kids were just as f**ed up as we thought they were plus suicidal. AMERICAN CHERRY calls to mind that poor white kids are just as dangerous, lost and confused as the rest of us.
