Well Go USA Sets U.S. Release for Min Kyu-dong’s The Old Woman With the Knife

One of the most buzzed-about South Korean action thrillers of the season, The Old Woman With the Knife, is finally heading to theaters in the U.S. and Canada on May 16, 2025. Directed by Min Kyu-dong (All About My Wife), the film is already turning heads internationally, set to make its world premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival with additional slots at the Brussels and Beijing International Film Festivals.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Gu Byeong-mo (Apartment Women, a New York Times Editors’ Choice), the story centers on Hornclaw, a legendary assassin in her sixties. As her body begins to fail and her violent past returns to haunt her, she’s forced into a brutal confrontation that tests her resilience, identity, and will to survive.

The trailer, now live on Well Go USA’s official page, teases slick, grounded action and a psychological edge rarely seen in films led by women in this age bracket. It’s a visceral, layered thriller that mixes genre violence with an existential edge—think arthouse adrenaline.

Lee Hye-young leads the cast with chilling precision, following her standout turns in In Front of Your Face and The Novelist’s Film. She’s joined by Kim Sung-cheol (Our Beloved Summer), Yeon Woo-jin (Daily Dose of Sunshine), and Kim Moo-yul (The Roundup: Punishment), forming a powerhouse ensemble that elevates the film’s emotional and physical stakes.

With its stylish direction, nuanced themes, and striking performances, The Old Woman With the Knife isn’t just a showcase of South Korea’s cinematic excellence—it’s a stark, timely meditation on violence, age, and personal agency.

The Old Woman With the Knife opens in theaters May 16. Watch the killer trailer now via Well Go USA and stay tuned for more on this festival favorite as it nears release.
