Review: Together – A Date-Night Body Horror Gem That Mixes Love, Laughter & Unease
Michael Shanks’ Together, starring real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco, has been making waves since its festival run at Sundance and SXSW, touted by some as one of the year’s best horror films. While I wouldn’t go quite that far, it’s undeniably one of 2025’s most charming and accessible entries in the genre.
At its core, Together isn’t just about body horror—it’s about relationships, crossroads, and the baggage we carry into new chapters of our lives. When Tim (Franco) and Millie (Brie) move to a secluded countryside home hoping to salvage their relationship, their attempt at a fresh start unravels into a strange, unsettling spiral where love, dependency, and literal transformation intertwine.
What’s most surprising is how much Together leans into its romance narrative without losing sight of its horror identity. The body horror elements are present but restrained—more suggestive than grotesque. This decision works in its favor, allowing the tension between Tim and Millie to take center stage, making it an oddly relatable and even funny exploration of intimacy under extreme stress.
Shanks’ direction borrows from cult and Japanese horror aesthetics (there’s a Ju-On-style moment that fans will clock immediately), but the film ultimately feels closer to a quirky indie romance with horror flourishes than a full-on fright-fest. Its humor is sharp, its relationship drama believable—especially given Brie and Franco’s natural chemistry—and even the gore, while understated, punctuates the emotional beats well.
Calling it the “best horror of the year” oversells it, but Together is absolutely a perfect “date horror” film: funny, weirdly sweet, unsettling in just the right doses, and accessible enough for audiences who might shy away from the genre’s more extreme entries. Think The Substance lite with a dash of What If. Plus, it has dogs—so bonus points for that.
Final Verdict: 3/5 – A delightful mix of love, laughter, and light horror that’s more date-night quirky than nightmare fuel. Not groundbreaking, but undeniably fun.
Together hits theaters everywhere August 1, and it’s exactly the kind of relationship horror flick you can watch with your partner and still sleep soundly afterward.
