Vietnamese Found-Footage Horror Hit ‘Lau Chu Hoa: The Deadliest Mansion’ Sets North American Theatrical Release
Vietnamese found-footage horror film Lầu Chú Hoả: The Deadliest Mansion is heading to North American theaters on September 4, with Mockingbird Pictures placing the film across AMC, Regal and Cinemark locations.
Directed by Hùng Trần, the film became Vietnam’s first theatrical found-footage horror release and emerged as a local box office success following its June debut. The film topped the Vietnamese box office, surpassed one million admissions and reached more than VND78 billion, or approximately $3 million, in cumulative grosses.
The story is based on the Vietnamese urban legend surrounding the Hứa family estate. The film follows a group of young streamers who enter the reportedly haunted mansion in hopes of turning the experience into online attention and financial gain. Their broadcast instead becomes connected to the long-running legend known as the “Ghost of the Hứa Family.”
The entire film was shot in a found-footage format, continuing the genre’s use of handheld cameras, in-world recordings and simulated documentary footage to place audiences inside the events unfolding onscreen.
Lầu Chú Hoả: The Deadliest Mansion was produced by Runup Vietnam alongside South Korea’s Hive Media Corp. The project marks Hive’s first production investment outside South Korea.
Hive Media Corp has previously backed several major Korean releases, including 12.12: The Day, Inside Men, The Man Standing Next and Harbin. The company was also involved with Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, the 2018 found-footage horror film that drew more than 2.6 million admissions in South Korea.
“Found footage has the power to make audiences feel as though they are experiencing the horror themselves,” producer Lee Jin Sung said. “Working with Hive Media Corp allowed us to bring that experience to a uniquely Vietnamese legend while preserving the identity and atmosphere that make the story distinctive.”
Mockingbird Pictures is handling the North American theatrical rollout as part of its broader effort to expand the international reach of Vietnamese commercial cinema.
“Lầu Chú Hoả: The Deadliest Mansion delivers one of the most intense Vietnamese horror experiences in recent years,” said Phong Duong, business director of Mockingbird Pictures and an executive producer at sister company Bluebells Studios. “We believe this is a film that can travel, and we want audiences around the world to experience that fear for themselves.”
Mockingbird Pictures currently distributes more than 60 new theatrical releases annually in Vietnam and handles more than 100 titles across post-theatrical platforms.
Lầu Chú Hoả: The Deadliest Mansion opens in North American theaters September 4 through Mockingbird Pictures.
