The zombie multiverse just got a lot messier.
Saber Interactive has officially locked in a January 29 release date for its long-anticipated crossover between World War Z and AMC’s The Walking Dead, delivering what might be one of the most fan-service-heavy undead team-ups in recent memory. The new DLC arrives across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Built as a three-mission campaign, the expansion drops players directly into some of the most iconic locations from The Walking Dead universe — including the Prison, the Alexandria Safe Zone, and Grady Memorial Hospital. Players can step into the boots of Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Negan, and Michonne, with Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus returning to voice their legendary characters. Yes, that means Lucille, Michonne’s katana, and Daryl’s brutal efficiency are all fully playable.
What makes this crossover especially intriguing is how it reshapes World War Z’s core mechanics. Saber Interactive has reworked its signature Zeke swarms into Walking Dead-style Walkers for this campaign — slower, heavier, and relentless in a very different way. The DLC introduces a new enemy type as well: the Spiked Walker, a heavily armored threat that forces players into close-quarters strategy and fast melee execution.
In a recent Q&A with Variety, Saber’s Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits explained that this collaboration has been years in the making. Fans of World War Z had been requesting a Walking Dead crossover since the game’s early days, and once discussions with AMC began, the fit became undeniable. The goal, according to Willits, was authenticity — honoring the DNA of both franchises while creating something that feels fresh for longtime players.
The timing also makes sense. World War Z recently surpassed 30 million players worldwide, and this DLC is clearly designed as both a reward for longtime fans and an entry point for Walking Dead viewers who may have never touched the game. Swarm Engine chaos meets character-driven survival horror, and the result looks like a love letter to zombie fans across mediums.
Whether you’re here to mow down Walkers as Rick Grimes, swing Lucille with Negan, or see how The Walking Dead’s slower dread collides with World War Z’s overwhelming scale, this is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious zombie crossovers in recent years. Undead history gets rewritten on January 29.
