New Stills from Backrooms Reveal Liminal Horror Ahead of May 29 Release
A new look at one of the most anticipated horror titles of the spring has arrived as fresh stills from Backrooms give a clearer sense of the film’s unsettling tone ahead of its theatrical debut on May 29.
Directed by Kane Parsons and based on his viral series, Backrooms expands the internet-born phenomenon into a full-length feature. The story begins with a seemingly simple premise—a strange doorway appearing in the basement of a furniture showroom—but quickly moves into something far more disorienting.
The newly released stills highlight the film’s reliance on environment. Stark yellow office spaces, unnatural lighting, and empty, repeating architecture reinforce the sense of isolation that defined the original concept. The imagery leans heavily into liminal space horror, where familiarity becomes distorted and navigation itself becomes a threat.
The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, alongside Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. The cast is positioned within a narrative that appears to focus less on traditional structure and more on spatial tension and psychological unease.
Written by Will Soodik, the film builds on the original series’ concept of endless, interconnected spaces that exist outside normal reality. The stills suggest a progression beyond simple exploration, introducing physical threat and human presence within those environments.
With its transition from short-form internet horror to theatrical release, Backrooms represents one of the more direct adaptations of digital-era storytelling into a studio-backed feature. The early visuals point toward a film that prioritizes atmosphere, scale, and disorientation over conventional narrative beats.
Backrooms opens in theaters May 29.
