Original Blair Witch Creators Join Reboot Team as Lionsgate and Blumhouse Move Forward
Per THR, A major shift is underway for one of horror’s most influential franchises as Lionsgate’s upcoming Blair Witch reboot brings key voices from the original film back into the fold.
According to reports, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams—two of the stars from The Blair Witch Project—have joined the new film as executive producers. They are joined by original directors Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale, marking the first meaningful involvement from the original creative team in decades.
The reboot will be directed by Dylan Clark, working from a script by Chris Devlin, with Clark also contributing rewrites. The project is being developed under the multi-film partnership between Lionsgate and Blumhouse Productions, alongside Atomic Monster.
The move follows public frustration from members of the original film’s team, who previously voiced concerns about being excluded from earlier sequels and the initial reboot announcement. The inclusion of these creatives suggests a course correction—one that could bring the franchise closer to the tone and authenticity that made the original a cultural landmark.
Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project redefined independent horror. Produced on a modest budget, the film became a global phenomenon, earning nearly $250 million worldwide and pioneering the found-footage format that would influence an entire generation of genre filmmaking.
The new version is being positioned as a reintroduction of the property for modern audiences, with producers including Jason Blum and James Wan, alongside Roy Lee and the Divide/Conquer team.
While plot details remain under wraps, the involvement of original voices signals an effort to reconnect the reboot with the DNA of the 1999 film—grounded horror, psychological tension, and the unknown lurking just beyond the frame.
As the project moves forward, the question becomes whether this new iteration can recapture the raw, unsettling impact that made Blair Witch one of the most profitable and influential horror films of all time.
