Casper Kelly’s Buddy Unleashes a Nightmare-Fueled Teaser Ahead of August Release

If there is a single trailer destined to haunt viewers’ dreams over the next few weeks, it may very well be Buddy.

Roadside Attractions and Saban Films have released the first official teaser for the upcoming horror film from writer-director Casper Kelly, the filmmaker behind Adult Swim’s cult phenomenon Too Many Cooks and one of the standout segments from the latest V/H/S installment. After generating buzz at Sundance and several festival screenings, Buddy is now set to open in theaters nationwide on August 28.

The teaser wastes little time establishing that something is deeply wrong beneath its bright, colorful surface.

Set inside the cheerful world of It’s Buddy!, a beloved children’s television program, the film centers on Buddy, a bright orange unicorn who spends his days teaching life lessons through songs, games, and friendship. Surrounded by smiling children, colorful sets, and endless positivity, the show initially appears to be the kind of wholesome entertainment designed for young audiences.

But that illusion quickly begins to crack.

According to the official synopsis, the story takes a dark turn when one child refuses to participate in Buddy’s carefully controlled world. As resistance grows, Buddy’s seemingly cheerful demeanor gives way to something far more unsettling, exposing a disturbing reality lurking beneath the manufactured happiness.

The teaser leans heavily into that contrast, transforming familiar children’s television imagery into nightmare fuel. Bright colors, exaggerated smiles, and forced positivity gradually become sources of dread, creating an atmosphere that feels equally inspired by children’s programming, psychological horror, and surreal satire.

The project boasts a remarkable cast led by Cristin Milioti (The Penguin, Palm Springs), Delaney Quinn, Patton Oswalt, and Michael Shannon, with additional appearances from Topher Grace and Keegan-Michael Key.

Kelly co-wrote the screenplay with Jamie King, continuing the filmmaker’s fascination with twisted Americana, media culture, and the uncomfortable space where nostalgia and horror collide.

Genre fans have been eagerly awaiting Buddy since its Sundance debut, where early reactions praised its bizarre tone, unsettling imagery, and willingness to embrace pure nightmare logic. While many horror films borrow imagery from childhood fears, Buddy appears determined to build its entire identity around them.

The result looks less like a traditional horror movie and more like a fever dream that slowly mutates into something sinister.

Produced by Tyler Davidson, Drew Sykes, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, and Tracy Rosenblum, the film comes from BoulderLight Pictures and Low Spark Films in association with Sipur Studios and Substance.

Based on the first teaser alone, Buddy appears poised to become one of the year’s strangest and most talked-about horror releases. Equal parts children’s television parody, psychological horror, and surreal nightmare, the film looks ready to weaponize nostalgia in ways that are both hilarious and deeply unsettling.

Whether audiences leave the theater terrified, confused, or both, one thing seems certain: Buddy is not the childhood friend he wants you to believe he is.

Buddy arrives exclusively in theaters on August 28 from Roadside Attractions and Saban Films.
