‘Buzzkill’ Sets September Release on Tubi With Siena Agudong and Brec Bassinger

Tubi is adding another original horror-comedy to its fall lineup, with Buzzkill set to begin streaming September 25 on the free streaming service.

Directed by Jem Garrard, the YA slasher stars Siena Agudong (Sidelined: The QB and Me), Brec Bassinger (Final Destination Bloodlines) and Aliyah’s Interlude (English Teacher) as part of an ensemble caught in a deadly situation involving a group of sorority sisters.

Buzzkill follows Nora, played by Agudong, after she and her fellow sorority sisters become trapped with a killer targeting members of their group. Nora may possess the information needed to piece together what is happening, but there is a complication: her memories from the night are tied to how much she had to drink, forcing her to reconstruct the events while the danger continues around them.

Suzanne Keilly, whose credits include the 2021 Slumber Party Massacre, wrote the screenplay, with Garrard directing following work that includes R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead. The film comes from Blue Ice Pictures.

Ryan Plachcinski, Haley Wiseman, Adam Friedlander and Tebogo Maila serve as producers. Agudong, Garrard, Keilly and Lance Samuels executive produce.

The newly released first-look images accompany the September premiere announcement and provide an early look at the characters and the film’s combination of sorority comedy and slasher conventions.

Agudong said the production encouraged the cast to become familiar with established horror tropes before filming, allowing them to understand the genre conventions the movie intended to play with.

“When I first met with our director, Jem Garrard, to talk about Buzzkill, they gave me a watch list full of horror classics and told me to get familiar with the genre tropes because we planned to push the limits of each one,” Agudong said.

Garrard described Nora as a departure from the traditional final-girl archetype, with the character frequently making mistakes while attempting to navigate the situation surrounding her.

“Nora isn’t your traditional final girl,” Garrard said. “She screws up constantly and is spectacularly ill-equipped for what’s happening around her, but we never stop rooting for her.”

The director also characterized the film as an intentionally playful take on the slasher format, with its ensemble and comedy functioning alongside the central murder mystery.

The project gives Bassinger another genre appearance following Final Destination Bloodlines, while Agudong continues her work with Tubi after starring in Sidelined: The QB and Me and its sequel.

Buzzkill begins streaming exclusively on Tubi September 25.
