Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Drops Final Trailer as Netflix Sets January 22 Premiere
Today, Netflix unveiled the final trailer for Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, a vibrant, music-driven animated feature that blends action, magic, idol pop energy, and sleek digital fantasy into one neon-bright package. Alongside the trailer, Netflix also released a striking new poster depicting the film’s heroines inside a bedroom studio setup—an image that feels perfectly tuned to modern creator culture.
Set to stream January 22, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! continues Netflix’s aggressive expansion into high-profile animated originals, and this one already feels poised to become a breakout.
A Feature Debut with Serious Pedigree
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Shingo Yamashita, whose visual fingerprints helped define the opening sequences of Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura. Yamashita’s sense of motion, rhythm, and high-impact animation style is front and center here—only now scaled up to a full-length cinematic experience.
Production comes from Studio Colorido (Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away) in collaboration with Yamashita’s newly launched Studio Chromato, signaling a bold new creative chapter.
Music at the Core
At its heart, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is driven by music. The soundtrack features contributions from some of the most influential Vocaloid and J-pop producers working today, including ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), HoneyWorks, 40mP, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. The result is an audio-visual experience designed to feel as much as it dazzles—where songs aren’t just background elements, but narrative engines.
The main theme, “Ex-Otogibanashi,” is performed by Yachiyo Runami (voiced by Saori Hayami), anchoring the film’s emotional core.
A Modern Myth in a Virtual World
Set within the dreamlike digital realm of Tsukuyomi, the story follows Iroha Sakayori, a 17-year-old juggling school, work, and escapism through a popular virtual streaming space. Her life changes when she encounters a mysterious infant who rapidly grows into Kaguya, a self-indulgent yet magnetic presence with lunar secrets of her own.
As Iroha becomes Kaguya’s producer and creative partner, the two form a powerful bond through streaming, music, and performance—unaware that darker forces are closing in, intent on reclaiming Kaguya and dragging her back to the moon.
It’s a remix of classic folklore through the lens of modern online identity, parasocial connection, and digital self-expression.
Anticipation Is Already Sky-High
Momentum is firmly on the film’s side. A previously released special trailer topped YouTube’s Trending Movie Trailers chart in Japan and surpassed 15 million views as of late November—an impressive feat that suggests Cosmic Princess Kaguya! may be Netflix’s next animated phenomenon.
With its fusion of idol culture, genre spectacle, and Yamashita’s unmistakable visual flair, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! looks ready to hit hard when it streams exclusively on Netflix on January 22.
