Epic Pictures’ DREAD Label Unearths True-Crime Horror ‘Dorothea’ This Halloween
Chad Ferrin’s Latest Turns a Sweet Granny into a Serial Killer Legend
Epic Pictures’ horror label DREAD is digging into the roots of real evil with DOROTHEA, a shocking true-crime horror film about one of America’s most notorious serial killers, Dorothea Puente. The film opens for a limited theatrical run on October 31, followed by a VOD release on November 4.
Written and directed by Chad Ferrin (Pig Killer, H.P. Lovecraft’s the Old Ones, Ed Kemper), Dorothea marks the next entry in DREAD’s growing slate of biographical horror films, following Ed Kemper earlier this year and with Richard Ramirez up next.
The film stars Susan Priver as the deceptively kind killer, alongside Lew Temple (The Walking Dead), Brinke Stevens, Ginger Lynn, and Ezra Buzzington (The Artist).
“The audience loved it from the first frame to the last,” Ferrin said following the film’s world premiere at the Valley Film Festival. “With the amazing job Dread did on Ed Kemper, I know Dorothea is in the best possible hands.”
Blending true crime and psychological horror, Dorothea recounts the horrifying story of a seemingly sweet grandmother who murdered her elderly and disabled tenants, burying them in her Sacramento garden. Behind her warm smile and quiet demeanor lurked a manipulative predator who used kindness as a weapon.
“Dorothea is the second in our series of unflinching true-crime films exploring the darkest corners of human nature,” said Patrick Ewald, Executive Producer and CEO of Dread. “Chad Ferrin captures the atmosphere and psychology of the era with a singular vision that chills to the bone.”
Ewald confirmed that DREAD’s next collaboration with Ferrin will focus on Richard Ramirez, the infamous “Night Stalker,” promising an even deeper dive into the horrors of real-life monsters.
With Dorothea, DREAD continues to prove that sometimes the most terrifying killers don’t wear masks—they wear smiles.
DOROTHEA premieres in select theaters October 31, before arriving on VOD November 4, from Epic Pictures and DREAD.
