A showcase of bold visions: Fantastic Fest celebrates its 20th year with world premieres, cult voices, and shorts that redefine genre.
A showcase of bold visions: Fantastic Fest celebrates its 20th year with world premieres, cult voices, and shorts that redefine genre.

FANTASTIC FEST PRESENTS THE 2025 SHORT FILM LINEUP

‍One of the long-standing staples of Fantastic Fest is its short film programming. Whether paired with a feature or grouped into international blocks, shorts have always been a launchpad for genre filmmakers who later became fest regulars. This year’s lineup features an eclectic range of premieres, with returning favorites like Sam Fox (Open Wide) among a stacked roster of new voices.

The 20th anniversary edition of Fantastic Fest runs September 18–25, 2025 at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, TX.

A Curated Celebration of Genre

This year’s shorts program was curated by veteran programmers Jean Lauer and Varun Raman, joined by genre devotees Brad Abrahams and Rocco T. Thompson. Together, they’ve assembled a lineup designed to delight, disturb, and expand the festival’s scope while keeping true to its reputation for showcasing bold, weird, and unforgettable storytelling.

Competitions & Sidebars

The shorts slate will once again feature Fantastic Fest’s four flagship competitions:

  • Fantastic Shorts – a wild genre-blender of ideas, styles, and tones.

  • Short Fuse – homegrown horror at its sharpest and weirdest.

  • Shorts With Legs – eccentric, daring, and often hilarious visions.

  • Drawn & Quartered – animated madness across every possible style.

Special programming includes Alums and Other Demons, highlighting work from returning filmmakers, and Fantastic India, presented in partnership with Indie Meme and Wench Film Festival, spotlighting horror, fantasy, and surreal visions from Indian and Indian diaspora filmmakers.

What Audiences Can Expect

From floating farmers, detachable body parts, and skeleton warnings to nightmarish rideshares, demonic cherubs, and udder worship, this year’s shorts lineup balances international premieres, world debuts, and the return of fest alums. Experimental, satirical, haunting, and absurd, the selections embody Fantastic Fest’s legacy as a launchpad for some of the most exciting names in genre cinema.

Why Shorts Still Matter

Short films have long been an essential part of the Fantastic Fest DNA—serving not only as showcases for boundary-pushing talent but also as fan-favorite programming blocks that often deliver some of the festival’s most surprising, talked-about moments.

Expect world premieres, award winners, returning alumni, and first-time filmmakers to all collide in Austin this September, proving once again that shorts are where genre thrives and mutates best.

The complete lineup, divided by program, is as follows:

FANTASTIC INDIA

A Presentation in partnership with Indie Meme and Wench

Indian cinema has a vast layered history and a remarkable range of storytelling traditions. Fantastic India presents an incisive look at the evolving landscape of Indian genre cinema, focusing on horror, fantasy, and the surreal with a fresh perspective. While Indian cinema has long engaged with genre, many films remained bound to familiar clichés and imported tropes. Today, a new wave of filmmakers is shaping work rooted in authentic narratives that reflect the diversity and depth of Indian experiences.

This sidebar showcases films that move beyond formulaic depictions of ghosts and monsters, embracing psychological tension, folklore, social realities, and innovative storytelling. They confront fears and myths shaped by specific cultural contexts, local environments, and both urban and rural life.

Among them are works by women filmmakers, bringing authorship and perspective to a space where they have too often been invisible. These films make that perspective visible, shifting the frame, the focus, and the fear. Their presence signals a broader but still fragile shift in Indian genre cinema, which remains premature due to limited funding, minimal infrastructure, and a lack of development pipelines that restrict experimentation and visibility despite clear creative potential.

Fantastic India expands the vocabulary of genre, presenting narratives uniquely Indian in voice and texture, free from Western horror frameworks. Blending satire, surrealism, and political commentary, these films capture an evolving cinematic imagination and challenge conventions.

Fantastic India is a celebration of what’s emerging and an invitation to imagine what’s next.
