"Gassed Up" - movie review

While British youth have made significant inroads into US television and Hollywood, many compelling stories from their country remain untold. Fans of shows like "Top Boy" and "Love/Hate" are well-acquainted with the UK underbelly, initially brought to our attention by Guy Ritchie films. George Amponsah's "Gassed Up" is a new entry in this genre, akin to "Attack The Block" and "Cherry Tree Lane," showcasing how the younger generation navigates coming of age amidst crime and drug culture.

For Ash (Stephen Odubola), Roach (Craige Middleburg), Dubz (Taz Skylar, who also wrote the film), and Kabz (Mohammed Mansaray), street life is all they know. They ride motor scooters around the city, robbing people of cell phones and small items. There are rules to this lifestyle, and once broken, there is no turning back. Ash, tasked with taking care of his sister, turns to fast money as his only solution.

"Gassed Up" delves into the perils facing the youth, exploring the different dynamics of each character and their roles. This simple formula has been used in many organized crime films. However, the UK hip-hop soundtrack and the intense action scenes of the boys on scooters keep the adrenaline high throughout.

Stephen Odubola and the rest of the cast stand out with bright futures in the industry. As the lead, Odubola carries much of the film, immersing himself in a role that resonates with any young man growing up in challenging conditions. His performance is award-worthy as he navigates the complex emotions and challenges of his character.

The action in "Gassed Up" is spectacular, though the execution of some of the capers and larger projects feels far-fetched. It's hard to believe this group of bandits could pull off such outlandish deeds, though this could be part of the film's appeal. Despite its short runtime of 1 hour and 42 minutes, some moments feel longer, as the film's rapid start occasionally makes the slower scenes feel out of place. The identities of the characters are familiar, echoing themes from block boy culture commonly seen in UK crime dramas. This familiarity makes "Gassed Up" predictable at times.

Overall, "Gassed Up" offers an entertaining ride but doesn't break new ground in the genre.

2.5/5
