Review: “M” by Vardan Tozija – A Heartfelt Post-Apocalyptic Thriller
M stands for more than just Marko; it represents movies, murder, mayhem, and most importantly, Mom. In Vardan Tozija’s engaging zombie thriller M, a young boy named Marko navigates a pandemic-ravaged wasteland, searching for meaning beyond survival. The film quietly unfolds with tension and heart, exploring familiar themes of humanity’s evil and hope within the survival horror genre. However, it’s Matej Sivakov’s unforgettable portrayal of Marko that truly stands out, making M both harsh and beautiful at the same time.
In a world filled with death and betrayal, Marko and his father (played by Sasko Kocev) live in silence and isolation, hidden within a lush, green forest that serves as their only refuge. The forest is more than a backdrop—it amplifies the film’s suspense and adds complexity to the unfolding events. Tozija’s precision and attention to detail are masterfully brought to life through Sivakov’s and Kocev’s performances, allowing viewers to get lost in this almost mythical post-apocalyptic world.
While M draws comparisons to familiar survival horror titles like The Walking Dead and 28 Days Later, it stands out by delivering the story through the eyes of a child. This perspective offers a fresh reflection on the themes of parenting, hope, and innocence that resonate throughout the film. As recent horror films have shown, the role of parents—both their strengths and flaws—remains a central theme. M reminds us that even in the darkest times, hope can still be found in the innocence of children.
