Joan Chen-Led Thriller ‘The Evil Inside’ Heads to Cannes Market With Vorteks Handling Sales

The Cannes market continues to expand its international genre slate, and one of the more intriguing psychological thrillers entering the mix is The Evil Inside, a Taiwan-set horror-thriller starring Joan Chen.

Vorteks—the genre-focused division of Dubai-based sales outfit Cercamon—has officially boarded international rights outside Taiwan for the project ahead of the Cannes Film Market. The acquisition also marks the company’s first Asian title under the Vorteks label, signaling a broader push into global genre cinema.

Directed by Lingo Hsieh, The Evil Inside is currently in post-production and appears to blend psychological horror with social commentary and survival-thriller mechanics.

Inspired by real events in Taiwan, the story follows Ho Jen-Jen, a once-famous entertainment figure known as the “Golden Phoenix,” who disappeared after accumulating devastating gambling debt and abandoning her young daughter. She later awakens trapped inside a disturbing care facility where terminally ill patients gamble away the remaining years of their lives in a deadly competition known as “Death Bet.”

The premise alone positions The Evil Inside in a deeply uncomfortable psychological space—part institutional nightmare, part morality thriller, with existential horror woven directly into its core concept.

Chen’s involvement immediately elevates the project. Best known internationally for performances in The Last Emperor and Twin Peaks, she has consistently brought emotional depth and unpredictability to her work. According to Vorteks’ David Kwok, the film features a performance unlike anything audiences have seen from her before.

Joining Chen are Jason King, Eugenie Liu, and Zin Yang, further strengthening a cast that appears built around layered character tension rather than straightforward genre spectacle.

Behind the scenes, the film is produced by DaSun Pictures, with producer Jackol Kao reuniting with Hsieh following collaborations on The Bride and Green Door. That creative history matters, especially for a film that appears to balance culturally specific storytelling with broader universal fears surrounding mortality, guilt, and exploitation.

What makes The Evil Inside stand out early is its ability to feel both intimate and high-concept. Beneath the thriller framework is a deeply personal story about regret, motherhood, and survival—a combination Hsieh herself described as central to the film’s emotional foundation.

And in an era where international horror continues to push some of the boldest ideas in cinema, The Evil Inside feels positioned exactly where it should be: on the global stage, with Cannes serving as its launch point.
