Mockbuster Takes Aim at The Asylum in New Documentary Opening July 10
The world of mockbusters is getting its own documentary treatment this summer.
Giant Pictures has announced the release of Mockbuster, a new documentary following an Australian filmmaker's journey into the world of low-budget filmmaking as he takes on The Asylum, the production company behind franchises like Sharknado.
Executive produced by filmmaker and journalist David Farrier, the documentary will open in select theaters on July 10 while also becoming available nationwide on digital platforms.
Described as both hilarious and heartfelt, Mockbuster explores the unique ecosystem surrounding one of Hollywood's most recognizable independent studios. For decades, The Asylum has built a reputation for producing films inspired by major blockbuster releases, creating a category of filmmaking that eventually became known as "mockbusters."
Rather than simply parodying the phenomenon, the documentary follows an Australian director as he attempts to navigate and challenge the system that turned The Asylum into a cult entertainment powerhouse.
The project also offers an inside look at the business, creative process, and personalities behind one of independent cinema's most talked-about companies.
To celebrate the release, a special Los Angeles red carpet premiere will take place on July 9 and will feature a Q&A with executive producer David Farrier, the founders of The Asylum, and additional guests.

For horror fans and cult cinema enthusiasts, The Asylum has long occupied a unique place within genre filmmaking. While often polarizing, the studio has become synonymous with ambitious low-budget productions, viral marketing, and unconventional release strategies.
Mockbuster appears ready to examine that legacy while celebrating the passion, creativity, and chaos that helped build an entire filmmaking subculture.
Mockbuster opens in select theaters and on digital platforms nationwide beginning July 10.
