FIRESKY IGNITES WITH NESTA COOPER, KARIN KONOVAL & MICHAEL EKLUND IN A DARK SATIRE FROM KYLE RIDEOUT & JOSH EPSTEIN

Canadian genre cinema is cooking up something wicked—and a little unhinged. Filmmakers Kyle Rideout and Josh Epstein are back under their Motion 58 Productions banner with Firesky, a dark comedy that sounds equal parts absurd, explosive, and razor-edged. Now deep in post-production, the film brings together a standout cast led by Nesta Cooper (Dope Thief), Karin Konoval (War for the Planet of the Apes), and Michael Eklund (Wynonna Earp), with production quietly wrapped in and around Vancouver.

Rideout and Epstein, who co-wrote and co-produced the film, describe Firesky as a “dark satire” about a group of wildly inept employees working at a company hiding a sinister agenda. Think corporate chaos meets covert moral rot—served with the kind of tonal swagger these two filmmakers have become known for.

Rideout is directing, and he’s already hyping just how unhinged things get on screen. “Working with Nesta and Karin on Firesky was like watching a couple of firecrackers go off in a library,” he said. “Nesta’s so alive, it’s like she’s smuggling sunlight in her pockets… And Karin—oh boy, her foul-mouthed Bubs is a powerhouse.”

Epstein echoed the excitement, pointing out a full-circle moment for the creative team: “Michael Eklund was pivotal in the success of our first feature, Eadweard, so reuniting with him feels full circle. He’s one of Canada’s most mysterious chameleon-like actors.”

Firesky marks the duo’s latest collaboration following their work on the hockey drama Youngblood, directed by Hubert Davis and starring Blair Underwood and Ashton James, which premiered earlier this fall at TIFF 2025. With casting led by Kris Woz and Kara Eide—the team behind A24’s The Smashing Machine—the pedigree behind this project runs deep.

The setup alone feels tailor-made for genre fans who love their comedy dark, their satire biting, and their characters just a touch chaotic. If Rideout and Epstein lean into the gleeful weirdness they’re hinting at here, Firesky could become one of Canada’s sleeper hits of 2026.
