Night of the Reaper Brings 80s Suburban Slasher Terror to Shudder This Fall
Retro-styled slashers are thriving, and Brandon Christensen’s Night of the Reaper looks ready to join the lineup with all the late-night VHS energy horror fans crave. The film, set in 1980s suburbia, follows a college student returning home for a babysitting job—just as the local sheriff receives a cryptic VHS tape that sparks a deadly game of cat and mouse with a masked killer.
Shudder has released a brand-new trailer and poster for the film, which instantly call back to the blood-soaked, popcorn-fueled fright flicks of the decade. Night of the Reaper streams exclusively on Shudder starting September 19. Expect a full review from us before Fantastic Fest kicks off in Austin.
Synopsis
In the heart of a quiet, Reagan-era suburb, Deena reluctantly accepts a last-minute babysitting job. That same night, the town sheriff opens a mysterious package—a videotape that drags him into a sinister scavenger hunt. As the investigation unfolds, Deena is pulled deeper into the killer’s twisted game, fighting for her survival as the body count rises.
About the Director
Brandon Christensen, best known for Still/Born, Z, and The Puppetman, has carved out a space in horror by blending psychological tension with supernatural terror. His films often explore the anxieties of parenthood and family life, but with Night of the Reaper he leans into nostalgic slasher territory. Christensen’s distinctive touch—daytime horror and unnerving tension from ordinary circumstances—ensures this retro homage carries a modern bite.
Keep an eye on Night of the Reaper—this one promises VHS grit, suburban paranoia, and slasher thrills built for midnight marathons.
