CHANNING TATUM BREAKS BAD IN BIZARRE TRUE STORY
ROOFMAN
There’s dumb criminal energy—and then there’s whatever wavelength Roofman is on.
Based on the absurd, real-life story of Jeffrey Manchester, Roofman stars Channing Tatum as the charismatic ex-Army Ranger turned fast food bandit who made headlines for his signature method: breaking into McDonald’s restaurants through their roofs. That MO earned him the name “Roofman”—but the movie’s about much more than just clever crime.
After a prison escape, Jeffrey goes full folk legend when he hides out inside a Toys “R” Us for six months, surviving undetected while planning his next move. That is, until he meets Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced mother who falls for his charm without knowing the full story. It’s a heist drama, a twisted romance, and a cat-and-mouse thriller all rolled into one—with big Coen Brothers energy, a touch of Catch Me If You Can, and a surreal layer of Employee of the Month-style retail noir.
Written and directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines), the film is bolstered by a stacked cast that includes Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Uzo Aduba, Peter Dinklage, and Jimmy O. Yang. If the trailer is any indication, we’re in for a gritty, oddly heartwarming, and darkly comic crime tale about identity, reinvention, and the lengths one man will go to hide in plain sight.
Roofman is executive produced by Tatum and Cianfrance alongside a crew of indie and studio mainstays. It’s shaping up to be one of the more unexpectedly emotional crime flicks of the year—and a true story that’s too wild not to believe.
