SXSW 2026: American Dollhouse Teaser Trailer Unveiled Ahead of Midnighters World Premiere
Another intriguing genre entry is heading into the late-night chaos of South by Southwest.
The teaser trailer for American Dollhouse, the new psychological horror thriller written and directed by John Valley, has arrived ahead of the film’s world premiere at the 2026 SXSW Film Festival. The Austin-shot feature will debut in the festival’s Midnighters section, screening Saturday, March 13 at 10:30 p.m. at Alamo Lamar 4.
Already generating buzz within the festival circuit, American Dollhouse marks Valley’s sophomore feature following his cult breakout debut, The Pizzagate Massacre. With this new project, the filmmaker pivots toward darker psychological territory, blending proto-slasher DNA with modern indie horror sensibilities.
The film stars Hailley Lauren (1923), Kelsey Pribilski (Man Finds Tape), Tinus Seaux (The Pizzagate Massacre), Danielle Evon Ploeger (RATS!), and Richard C. Jones (Love & Death).
The story centers on a woman who returns to her childhood home in hopes of escaping a chaotic life defined by addiction and financial struggles. What begins as a retreat soon spirals into terror when a disturbed neighbor develops an unhealthy fixation on her—convinced she resembles his deceased mother.
As the obsession escalates, the woman’s friends begin disappearing one by one, drawing her into what the film describes as a twisted, blood-soaked Christmas nightmare.
Valley, whose first feature earned a cult following for its irreverent grindhouse tone, appears to be embracing more traditional psychological horror territory here. Early descriptions suggest American Dollhouse channels elements of classic suspense thrillers like Psycho and Black Christmas while exploring themes of grief, obsession, and fractured identity.
The project is also something of a hometown production. The cast and crew behind American Dollhouse are largely based in Austin, where the film was shot and produced—making its SXSW debut a particularly meaningful moment for the team.
“Premiering at SXSW is a real dream come true for me,” Valley said in a statement. “This film was made by real artists and technicians for the love of the craft, so debuting it here, in front of this audience, is incredibly meaningful.”
The film was produced by David Axe, Samuel Butler, and Shane Greb, alongside Jon Wroblewski and Christian Sosa of Roosevelt Film Lab, with Taylor Camarot serving as cinematographer.
With its SXSW premiere set for the Midnighters lineup and a teaser trailer offering a glimpse of its unsettling tone, American Dollhouse is shaping up to be one of the festival’s more intriguing late-night genre offerings.
