‘The Beast’ First Look Unleashes Samuel L. Jackson and Joel Kinnaman in Renny Harlin’s Presidential Action Thriller

Samuel L. Jackson is back in full shoot-‘em-up mode in the first teaser trailer for The Beast, a new action thriller from director Renny Harlin that puts the President of the United States behind the wheel of the country’s most heavily protected limousine.
Jackson stars alongside Joel Kinnaman and Guy Burnet in the film, written by Umair Aleem. The newly released teaser and poster offer the first look at a premise built around turning the presidential state car, commonly known as “The Beast,” into the centerpiece of an old-school action movie.
The Beast begins when a militia of unidentified hostiles launches a coordinated coup against the United States. With his Secret Service agent injured and the country under attack, the president is forced to take control of the presidential limousine himself.
Getting behind the wheel is only the beginning. The president must unlock the vehicle’s highly classified offensive capabilities as he attempts to protect his wounded agent, reunite with his wife and prevent the attack from escalating further.
The setup gives Harlin plenty of room to lean into the kind of large-scale action filmmaking that has defined much of his career. The director’s credits include Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea and The Long Kiss Goodnight, and the first footage from The Beast suggests a similarly straightforward approach to action spectacle.
Jackson also appears to be operating firmly within familiar territory. The teaser presents the actor firing off one-liners between gunfire and escalating action, recalling the unapologetic action vehicles that have been a recurring part of his career.
Kinnaman should be equally comfortable with the material after starring in action projects including The Suicide Squad and the Silent Night remake. Here, the pairing of Jackson and Kinnaman gives The Beast the makings of a two-man survival movie, albeit one unfolding inside and around one of the most secure vehicles in the world.
The presidential limousine’s fictionalized capabilities appear to be a significant part of the movie’s hook. Rather than simply serving as transportation or an armored refuge, The Beast becomes an offensive weapon as the president discovers exactly what has been hidden inside the classified vehicle.
The first footage isn’t presenting The Beast as a restrained political thriller. This looks much closer to a throwback action movie built around gunfire, explosions, one-liners and two men attempting to survive increasingly impossible circumstances.
For viewers who enjoy Jackson in that particular mode, the teaser makes a straightforward pitch: put Samuel L. Jackson in the presidential limousine, surround him with armed enemies and let the shooting begin.
The Beast is directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Umair Aleem and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Joel Kinnaman and Guy Burnet.
