Nelson Yeo Assembles Cast for Genre-Blending Sci-Fi Fantasy The House on the Moon

Singapore filmmaker Nelson Yeo is moving forward with his next feature, The House on the Moon, a genre-blending project that continues the rising director’s momentum following his breakout debut. According to Variety, Yeo has assembled the principal cast for the film, which fuses mythology, science fiction, and martial fantasy into a singular cinematic vision.

Yeo first made waves on the international circuit with Dreaming & Dying, which made history at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival as the first Southeast Asian film to win both the Golden Leopard in the Filmmakers of the Present category and the Best First Feature award. That success has positioned Yeo as one of the most closely watched emerging voices in Asian genre cinema.

The House on the Moon centers on Chang Er, a fairy maiden who lives on the moon with her lover Hou Yi. When Hou Yi, a legendary archer tasked with rescuing the dying sun, mysteriously disappears, Chang Er is forced to leave her lunar sanctuary and venture into the moon’s dark side. Her journey becomes even more dangerous when she crosses paths with an earthbound bandit who crash-lands into her world, pulling her into a conflict that blends myth, destiny, and survival.

Lim Shi An leads the film as Chang Er, with Dominick Rustam starring as Hou Yi. Akira Huang appears as the Bandit, while Harry Chang plays Feng Meng. The cast also includes Taiwanese screen icon Lee Kang-sheng, a longtime collaborator of Tsai Ming-liang, who takes on the role of Yue Lao, with Doreen Toh rounding out the ensemble as Yin Yuan.

Yeo cited his love for genre-defying Hong Kong cinema of the 1990s as a key influence on the project, describing The House on the Moon as a continuation of that tradition through a contemporary lens. He emphasized the cast’s willingness to embrace both physical performance and emotional depth as essential to bringing the story to life.

The film is a Singapore–Taiwan co-production led by Momo Film Co and Aview Images, with Tan Si En, Wendy Lie, and Kuek Shee Heng serving as producers. Financing includes support from the Singapore Film Commission’s VP Grant and Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), alongside partners 9LB Film and KawanKawan Media. The project also represents another milestone for Momo Film Co, which has produced acclaimed titles such as Don’t Cry, Butterfly, A Useful Ghost, and Dreaming & Dying.

Currently in production, The House on the Moon is targeting a release later in 2026, positioning itself as one of the more ambitious and unconventional Asian genre projects on the horizon.
