Barbara Crampton-Led Alien Thriller The Blue Diamond Heads to Bloody Bites This June
One of our favorite filmmakers continues to make major moves on the genre scene.
Filmmaker Sam Fox's acclaimed horror short The Blue Diamond has officially landed a new home, with Bloody Bites announcing that the award-winning alien thriller will debut on the streaming platform June 5. The acquisition comes through Bloody Bites, the horror streaming initiative created through a partnership between Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting.
Directed by Sam Fox and written by Addison Heimann, The Blue Diamond stars Desiree Staples alongside horror icon Barbara Crampton. Produced by Geenah Krisht and Staples, the film blends grief, mystery, and extraterrestrial horror into a unique story set against the backdrop of a strange 1980s ski club.
The official synopsis follows a grieving daughter returning after the death of her toxic mother. Seeking closure, she finds herself surrounded by the eccentric members of a cult-like après ski club. As expected, things quickly spiral into stranger territory as hidden secrets emerge and an alien presence begins to reveal itself.
The short has already established itself as a festival favorite, collecting several notable awards throughout its run. Among its accolades are Best Short Film at Grimmfest, Best Editing at the Beverly Hills Film Festival, and Best Ensemble Cast at FilmQuest. The film previously secured distribution through Canal+ and Kanopy and is currently being developed into a feature-length project.
Cineverse and Bloody Bites programmer Tony Wash praised the film's impact on the festival circuit.
"The Blue Diamond is my favorite short film from last year's festival circuit," Wash said. "Barbara Crampton engages the audience with a colorful yet haunting performance and the production design is out of this world. I am beyond stoked to kick off season 18 of Screambox's Bloody Bites with The Blue Diamond."
Fox's momentum continues well beyond this release. Alongside collaborators Desiree Staples and Geenah Krisht, she is currently developing her debut feature film Eveningstar, written by Charles Pieper. The project is headed to the Cannes market as the team seeks to complete financing. Actors Ethan Daniel Corbett and Desiree Staples are currently attached to star.
Fox's latest short, Open Wide, has also been making the rounds at major genre festivals including Fantastic Fest, Fantasia, and Beyond Fest. Genre fans may also recognize her previous work on the horror-comedy Fck'n Nuts, which earned both jury and audience awards during its festival run, as well as the psychedelic horror short Bad Acid, which earned Fox a Best Director award at Nightmares Film Festival.
For fans of indie horror, practical creativity, and strange science fiction concepts, The Blue Diamond is finally getting another opportunity to find a wider audience when it arrives exclusively on Bloody Bites beginning June 5.
