Netflix Releases New Trailer for Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Ahead of January 2026 Premiere

Netflix has released the main trailer for Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, the upcoming original anime film directed by Shingo Yamashita, marking his feature-length directorial debut. Yamashita, widely known for his acclaimed opening sequences for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura, now steps into a full film with a project centered on music, identity, and a vivid virtual dreamscape. The film premieres January 22, 2026.

The previous special trailer already made a strong impact, topping YouTube’s “Trending Movie Trailers” chart in Japan and reaching more than 15 million views as of November 28. The full trailer expands on that momentum, pulling viewers into Tsukuyomi, the dreamlike virtual realm where the story unfolds.

The world of Tsukuyomi is powered by music, memory, and emotion. The film features original songs from top Vocaloid producers including ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. Yamashita’s fast, fluid animation style blends with these tracks to create the feeling of an electric live stage performance, with intense motion and bursts of color driving nearly every frame. Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is the first project produced by Yamashita’s new Studio Chromato, working in collaboration with Studio Colorido, known for Penguin Highway and A Whisker Away.

Netflix also revealed a new main visual showcasing Iroha (voiced by Anna Nagase) with her keyboard and Kaguya (voiced by Yuko Natsuyoshi) with her microphone. Yachiyo appears in the corner looking on from a rooftop, and a new character is shown in the upper right. The artwork highlights the shimmering atmosphere of Tsukuyomi and emphasizes Kaguya’s energetic, slightly tomboyish personality as she and Iroha attempt to create music that shapes their own ending.

The trailer opens with Kaguya performing “Watashiha Watashinokotoga Suki,” an original HoneyWorks track, before transitioning to the main theme, “Ex-Otogibanashi,” composed by ryo (supercell) and performed by Yachiyo, who serves as Tsukuyomi’s administrator. Footage moves between bright stage performances and high-motion action sequences, underscoring the hybrid feel of the film — part idol journey, part virtual fantasy, part emotional drama. Near the end, the footage hints at a potential separation as moon residents appear to intervene. Whether Kaguya will maintain her dream of becoming Tsukuyomi’s top idol remains a central question.

From the trailer alone, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! presents itself as a colorful, high-energy pop fantasy that blends internet-age idol culture with anime spectacle. The film’s emphasis on music, performance, and digital identity clearly positions it as a major animated release for Netflix in early 2026.

More updates on Cosmic Princess Kaguya! will follow as Netflix approaches its January 22 premiere.
