Netflix Reveals Teaser, Poster, and Release Date for The Ribbon Hero
Netflix has unveiled the teaser trailer, key art, release date, and lead voice casting for The Ribbon Hero, a new animated adaptation inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s classic manga Princess Knight. The film will stream worldwide beginning August 8, 2026.
Directed by Yuki Igarashi, the upcoming fantasy action feature follows Sapphire, a princess from the destroyed kingdom of Silverland who survives the catastrophic force known as Nergal. After arriving in the neighboring land of Goldland, Sapphire begins rebuilding her life before the same destructive force resurfaces and threatens the people around her once again.
The newly released teaser introduces the devastated world left behind by Nergal before shifting toward Sapphire’s transformation into the Ribbon Hero. Wrapped in flowing red ribbons and armed with a sword, Sapphire vows to protect others after losing everything she once knew. The footage also teases large-scale monster battles, emotional drama, and the appearance of a mysterious smiling figure tied to the larger conflict.
The official synopsis reads:
“Sapphire is the princess of a kingdom that no longer exists. Having lost everything in her homeland of Silverland to the calamity known as Nergal, she wanders in despair until she finally arrives in Goldland.
Though burdened by her past, she begins to find a glimmer of hope as she encounters the kindness of the people there. But as if to sneer at her peaceful new life, the calamity Nergal appears once more.”
Comedian and performer Saya will voice Sapphire in her first leading role in a feature-length animated production. According to Netflix, Saya connected closely with the character during recording sessions after discussions with the director about similarities between Sapphire’s emotional journey and her own life experiences.
Animation for the project is being handled by OUTLINE, the studio led by Igarashi and known for its visually detailed character animation. Igarashi previously gained major attention for his work on Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and Star Wars: Visions – Lop & Ochō.
The creative staff behind The Ribbon Hero also includes original character designer Kei Mochizuki, known for work on Fate/Grand Order and Touken Ranbu, alongside collaborator Mai Yoneyama, whose previous credits include Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and LAZARUS.
Music for the film is composed by Satoru Kosaki and Ryuichi Takada of MONACA.
The teaser already points toward a visually ambitious fantasy adventure combining emotional storytelling, large-scale action, and themes of survival, grief, and perseverance, while introducing a new interpretation of one of Tezuka’s most influential creations for a modern audience.
