Searchlight Acquires SXSW Horror Hit Monitor for 2027 Release

A person stares at a glowing screen as a dark presence emerges.
A hidden digital threat spreads beyond control in the SXSW breakout horror film Monitor.

Searchlight Acquires SXSW Horror Breakout Monitor, Sets 2027 Release

A new wave of digital-age horror is gaining traction as Searchlight Pictures secures U.S. rights to Monitor, the buzzy SXSW Midnighter entry from filmmakers Matt Black and Ryan Polly.

Premiering at SXSW Film Festival, Monitor quickly built momentum with its concept-driven approach to modern horror—one rooted in the unseen corners of the internet.

The film centers on a group of social media content moderators who encounter a disturbing video that shouldn’t exist. After blocking it, they realize the act itself may have triggered something far worse. The entity tied to the footage begins to spread—moving from screen to screen and targeting anyone who watches.

There’s no containment. No warning. Once it reaches you, it’s already in motion.

The cast includes Brittany O’Grady, Taz Skylar, Viveik Kalra, Ines Høysæter Asserson, Gunner Willis, Sara Alexander, and Camila Bejarano Wahlgren.

Behind the scenes, the project is backed by Temple Hill Entertainment—the team behind the Smile franchise—and Nostromo Pictures, with international sales handled by Protagonist Pictures.

Searchlight will distribute the film domestically, as well as in the U.K. and Southeast Asia, with a 2027 theatrical release planned.

The concept places Monitor within a growing subgenre focused on digital horror and the psychological toll of online ecosystems—specifically the unseen labor of content moderation. The premise taps into a familiar question with a sharper edge: what happens when something meant to be erased refuses to stay buried?

According to Searchlight president Matthew Greenfield, the film delivers a “visceral, modern thriller” built around the fear of what exists just beyond the edge of visibility.

For Black and Polly, the acquisition marks a full-circle moment. What began as a short film nearly a decade ago has evolved into a feature designed for theatrical impact—built to be experienced collectively, not individually.

With SXSW momentum and studio backing now in place, Monitor positions itself as part of the next wave of tech-driven horror—where the threat isn’t in the room with you, but already inside the screen.
