For a festival known for its chaos, Reflection in a Dead Diamond (Reflet dans un diamant mort) was the rare calm before — and after — the storm. Among the madness of this year’s Fantastic Fest, where every film fights to out-weird the next, Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s latest feature stood apart as something truly singular — not “different,” but distinctive: elegant, hypnotic, and intoxicatingly precise.
Shudder has now debuted the official trailer for Reflection in a Dead Diamond, marking the acclaimed duo’s return to the screen following Amer and Let the Corpses Tan. Known for transforming the language of giallo into something dreamlike and sensual, Cattet and Forzani trade blood-spattered grindhouses for the shimmering corridors of a luxury hotel on the Côte d’Azur — yet the danger feels no less visceral.
The film stars Fabio Testi (The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) as a retired spy whose world unravels after the mysterious woman next door disappears. What follows is a feverish descent into memory, moviemaking, and madness — a kaleidoscope of color, sound, and fractured identity. Also starring Yannick Renier, Koen De Bouw, Maria de Medeiros, and rising newcomer Thi Mai Nguyen, the film weaves together the elegance of a 1970s Euro-thriller with the dread of psychological horror.
After premiering in competition at Berlin, Reflection in a Dead Diamond stunned audiences at Fantastic Fest and Tribeca, earning praise as one of the most audacious, visually mesmerizing films on the circuit — a stylish collision of spycraft and surrealism that only Cattet and Forzani could conjure.
The film will stream exclusively on Shudder beginning December 5, giving fans worldwide a chance to experience its hypnotic atmosphere and unnerving beauty.
